I apologize if this is a completely amateur question to ask. Feel free to laugh and point you finger... but only if you actually answer the question.

I'm new to the RED... but I have a background in digital still photography. I shoot currently with the Canon 5D MkII. And while recently on set with the RED and the 5D side-by-side, I noticed the RED lens appears to be cropped... by the sensor I'm presuming.

We have the 18-50mm "Generation 1" lens.

18mm on the RED lens is not equivalent to the 18mm on the 5D. It actually looks closer to 28mm. Is there something I'm missing, or is the RED not actually a "full-frame" sensor like the 5D?

Is there anyway to get wider with this lens?

No. The RED is S35 which is a cinema standard that matches cinema standard lenses. The 5D, I believe, is a full frame camera in stills but does not use the entire sensor for motion it crops for a 16:9 aspect ratio which is TV standard. So neither are full frame in motion.

crop ratio

crop ratio

5D2 sensor is 43mm diagonal and Red M is 28mm so the crop factor is 43/28=1.54

Thanks guys. That clears that up.

Tim, you're right... I wasn't thinking about the aspect ratio... it does cut off the top and bottom... but the width is still ridiculous. I'm going to try mixing in a 5D shot every once in a while in the film. But I'm really skeptical as to how will the 2 will play together in the end. Those shots may never make it in.

Very useful stuff! Thanks Mitch!
