  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

JJ Abrams and Undercovers...

Light Iron is happy to be working on Undercovers with DT Brian Udoff who is manning one of our onset processing laboratories, Li OUTPOST. We make 2D and 3D versions of the system which are in use of a number of file-based projects across the globe with 32TB SAS raids custom built by the experts at MAXX Digital. I also have to give special thanks to DIT Steve Freebairn who pioneered the power behind custom, automated mobile dailies which he and I have used on numerous projects together, including Pirates. Thanks to the power of the iPad, mobile dailies infrastructures like OUTPOST are able to compress time, not just files. -That is another big step in the right direction for increasing creative control on any project, small or large.

Here are a couple pics of our OUTPOST system (there are 2 on Undercovers-one for main unit and 1 for second unit) which Brian operates on location and on the stage. One element I encourage everyone to consider from this discussion is cost. By mobilizing the dailies process (which gets better literally by the week due to custom software and hardware improvements) we find that traditional laboratory budgets actually decrease by a minimum of 15%. With the right talent and infrastructure, the more you mobilize on set, the more your dollars are able to amortize and stretch -all the while delivering instant feedback with sound, picture, grading in 2D and even 3D real-time playback all from one system.

Congrats Mike!

It's a Dell u2711, they are great for Data Management because of Resolution. They have a 10 bit panel. 2560x1440 resolution and can take the 2k output from the Rocket. Also, they have Display port, HDMI, 2 dual link dvi, and Component. It's the same panel as the iMac with a CCFL backlight for greater color reproduction. I wouldn't grade on it, but I believe grading is better done in a dark theater under super controlled conditions.

This is the link to the monitor http://accessories.us.dell.com/sna/productdetail.aspx?c=us&cs=04&l=en&s=bsd&sku=224-8284&redirect=1

The current price is several hundred less than before, super great deal (I should sell these things for a living :)

Why wouldn't you grade on it..? anything off about the color..?

Pricewise it goes for $1,100 but recent Dell reviews show people buying it
for $800 and $900 on Dell Deals Sales.

I was worried that this monitor wasn't going to be worth the money,
but Dell has certainly outdone themselves. Keep in mind that
I got it on the Dell Deals Sale for $799 plus tax which is an absolute steal.

Dell Days of Deal price of $900 helped me pull the trigger.

Just watchd the pilot.
Red? Really? Amazing cinematography.
I'm sorry story is lame, seems it will not be reconfirmed.

The pilot was shot on F35 with an amazing amount of F35 failures.

Looked like great fun but a finite story that would tire quickly. But it looks like it got cancelled but are they showing the rest of the series still.

Cinematography looks great though.

I'm not a big follower of US TV series per se, but it does seem that a lot get cancelled quickly...is that true? I think that studios should commit to something at least series by series rather than just cutting short when the ratings fall. It leaves a bad taste and a feeling of unfinished business. Buts just an outside perspective from someone who knows next to nothing of the politics of the system.

I did watch Caprica, although it was very weak in parts it was still enjoyable. But that got the chop too.

I like the Swedish model where TV and Film are very closely knited and feed from one another.

The Pilot Was Actually Genesis

The Pilot Was Actually Genesis

The pilot was shot by Michael Bonvillain, ASC on Genesis, (or it may have been an F35 but I believe it came from Panavision), with only some pickups and inserts done by myself with the RED MX. John Bartley, ASC and John Aronson were the main unit DPs on the rest of the series and I continued to pickup the odd shots, all with RED One MX. It did look great with fantastic production value, but the story got a little silly at times, so I guess it just proves that content trumps technology in entertainment.

I think you cant afford to wait for a series to grow when you sell airtime spots. Different if you sell subscriptions, look how stretched the last 2 Weeds are.
Me too found Caprica very entertaining.
