  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

EPIC... ready.

All this week Jarred, Deanan and I were testing EPIC until 4am EVERY night at the RED Studios. And we weren't alone. We had our ace, crack, number one firmware god with us updating and fixing issues we were finding during our testing. It really was unreal. It is something I will never forget. It was all about getting it done and getting it right. Every piece of us was invested in the process. I had to wonder how many of our competitors were up? How many cared as much as we did... how many really were as dedicated to ushering in the future as we were.

We love what we are doing... truly.

Jim

Thanks for the update Mr. Jannard - reading this post reminds me of another tech titan - Steve Jobs - who is doing what he does not to make a product or make a buck - but is in the game to change the world.

Truly inspiring. Thanks for including the RedUser folks in your endeavors.

OK - what does all this EXCITEMENT really mean now that we all can TASTE the EPIC and smell her freshness.

Jim said it means the PRODUCTION "PROCESS" CAN BEGIN -so lets look at what that potentially means.

1. Jim said he needed 18,000 parts. For each camera? or for all the cameras on order?
2. Tooling? The Brain had to be enlarged and the case holding it. How long does tooling take? Weeks? Months? How many parts are already tooled? (dont expect answers to these questions as its proprietary) but 18,000 parts is a SHIT TON of parts.
3. Assembly line - EPIC-X will be built in the US. How many part suppliers are going to run into shortages? This is the part RED has NO CONTROL OVER>.. but gets blamed for often. HOW Reliable are the sources?
4. Jarred mentioned SOME accessories and modules would ship later? But the camera
will function with items and accessories shipped. Can we presume BOMB EVF is something that will not be caught up? What else is trailing? Can you tell us?
5. How much more does the FCC have to approve? This has been really hard to gauge.
6. Is it really possible that Mark P and say the first 25-50 will be shipping in the next 7 weeks? i.e before year end?
7. Jim said there will be 13 Tattoos woking on features soon and getting real world feedback that ultimately can influence the build. OR, is the RED testing so complete (all the rigorous late nights) that you guys feel its ready for any feature? (Im assuming yes here).

The goal of this post is to try to gauge realistic expectations as to WHEN we need to have $ ready. With an end in sight, rough estimates (that may be missed) will really help some of us FISCALLY PLAN.

How much lead time will we have? Is this basically 60 day notice? 90 Day notice?
NAB NOTICE?

Having a RED ONE in the 1st 100 makes me optimistic... and GRATEFUL I jumped the line 2 years ago... but what does this all mean relative to schedule Jim? Sure, it can change, but are you at the point where you can bracket within a month? a week or two?

FISCAL PLANNING is my motive for questions here. THANKS !

So Jim, when can we expect to see some of this test footage you guys have been shooting till 4am every night!?

Congrats on this huge accomplishment!!!

Right now... the ones we have do 5K at 120fps (2.40:1) and 96 fps at full frame or 2:1. It does REDCODE 3:1 to 25:1 on the RED SSD... and syncs at 23.98, 24, 47.96 and 48 fps. Timecode works. Audio does not (yet). REDCINE-X has EPIC support (internal build).

It is ready for productions... and there will be announcements pretty soon about some big ones that will be shot on EPIC.

Jim

So Jim, will audio work by the time they ship....

Can't wait for the "SCARLET... ready" thread.... :-D

The side and rear SSD recording modules are available first.. in fact the Side SSD is the standard side module, we will not be making a side CF module for Epic. Don't worry though, there is an SSD adapter that turns CF cards into an SSD mag so you can still use all your CF cards in either the side SSD or read SSD modules.

And of course all RED monitoring options already work on EPIC.. the existing EVF, 5" and 7" LCDs as well as the new touchscreen monitors and of course the Bomb EVF. Plus 1080 HD-SDI and HDMI outputs on the brain.

so hot swap CF card module = hot swap ssd module? Sounds groovy to me!

The more options that allow for easy future expansion the better the next gen cams get!!

Cool. So you'll be able to run EPIC in minimal 'brain only' mode, with an SSD side module replacing the CF slot we see here? as thats how it ships?

Thx Jason

yes.. its how it will ship if you choose that option. Absolute minimum config would be a Brain, Side SSD and a Touchscreen monitor. (assuming you are powering from a battery belt or AC pack) Add a side handle for battery power and additional control, and/or a Redmote for icing on the cake and wireless control.

A question, I see that Epic is the primary focus to get all the tech working and running. So is there a possibility that because Epic is ready it's also pulling the Scarlet closer to release due to the technology being ready in Epic? It's essentially the same tech as in Scarlet I persume?

Congratulations guys. Hats off...
