Hi!

Will there be a conversion software with Scarlet to convert the RAW files into a more edit-friendly format (in cases where the system has lower performance)?

Tom

Redcine-x is available for free from RED already. Converts to many formats.

Tom,

Have you decided what you will use to edit? Your app of choice may already support RED.

Yes, my app does.
I tested Red One footage (a couple of seconds), but my system broke down with approx. 3 fps.
Even .h264 coded footages is really worse on a Windows based plattform.

So having no RED accelerator card it seems to be the only way to edit RED footage.

I doubt it has anything to do with Windows. I edit RED footage with CS5 on a Win7 laptop. Its a dual core laptop that is a couple of years old.

Be sure you are not trying to edit full resolution or quality. You only need to enable the highest quality when you are rendering for final output.

What are your system specs, Tom?

I can edit 4K R3D files just fine on both my HP laptop and my Macbook Pro. I have a RED Rocket card for what it offers, but I don't need it to edit, typically only for some occasional transcode requirements and for full debayer situations -- finish or for FX work. My old Macbook Pro from 2006 (2.33GHz Core 2 Duo w/2GB) edited dozens of RED projects in Adobe CS4 throughout 2009, before I finally replaced it with a new MBP a year ago last month. This new one (wasted purchase) is only about 15% faster... The new i5 and i7 models would've been better to wait for... Oh well.

3K is half the number of pixels of 4K, generally speaking. My systems tear through 3K RED files better than H.264 in many cases.
