  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Folks seem testy!

It's this whole 'Reid/Angle' thing. Now it's over. Sanity won.

I was thinking about the Epic earlier today, and one thing that
struck me -- which I'm sure is not lost on Jim -- is that while
the industry is still dominated by Panavision and Arri film
cameras ...

(When I say "dominated" I just mean that if you take all the
feature films and track what cameras are being used, it's
still very much traditional film cameras in the majority.)

But Epic is the camera to change that. Yes, the Red One
has made amazing progress and is being used on some
awesome features -- but Epic can become the "new standard,"
the camera that finally makes these film cameras obsolete,
and so I think Jim is being extra careful. He wants NOTHING
for anyone to be able to poke holes in.

That said, here is my wish list in order ...

- Epic-X/S35
- SSD Module
- Bomb EVF
- Scarlet S35
- Scarlet Fixed

Of course, I've only been around for 4-5 months, so I can't
imagine the frustration of those who have been waiting for
years now :-)

Anthony

P.S. -- Been to Red Studios/Store a couple times over the last
two weeks, it's AWESOME. The guys are so helpful and informative.

My dad always told me "Measure Twice, Cut Once" when building. Jim's motto is probably "Measure 'till it's perfect, Cut the film industry with our next release, and they'll bleed RED"

Whoa, whoa whoa there Shawn. You need to take a stress pill and get your level of testiness up to the tone set by this thread. I think your kind of cool, level-headed mode of speech is very uninflamitory and is highly unlikely to offend anyone at all on this forum. Just the sort of thing to fail to cause trouble 'round here. Get it together man! :cuss:

Oops, my bad! :-)

We paid far less for our Red MX than we would have been happy to pay for this kind of performance. We get great results.

We have saved tons of money on rentals by owning, and have made money renting to others, so buying was more than worth it.

Adobe CS5 has made workflow no more work than post-producing EX1 footage - but with way more possibilities for grading and reframing.

We are totally happy. There are no problems.

Epic can come when it may. For now we have an awesome camera that is a joy to shoot and edit with - better than I ever thought would exist let alone that we could own.

OP:

I think in the past few weeks folks have been a bit testy on REDUSER.net (myself included at times).

So, I am opening this thread in the hopes that people will vent their frustrations.

Go ahead! Have at 'er.

David

I hear where you are coming from but the premise is kind of silly since no one with a brain is going to seriously vent, due to this:

Jim's sig:

Which leads to either watered down expressions of frustrations or this:

Is it really "better than (you) thought would exist?"

I like the Red1 too, but part of the reason I was comfortable with it and jumped on it right away at NAB 2006 is that I thought that not only was it possible but that it was a natural extension of where things were heading. (high resolution, high frame rate SLRs; motion video capture on consumer still digicams; flash based capture, etc.)

I think Epic is going to be dramatically better in a lot of ways, which is why I am anxious to get it - sooner rather than later! :-)

OMG where did you find that? Too funny :)

M

As someone posted (on YouTube) before me, it looks like it was shot on the set of a porn film. Although, given Engelbert's facial and chest hair, maybe he recorded it on his lunch break ;-)

Michael,

Are you suggesting that RED has it's customers so afraid of them that they won't complain about stuff?

Is there a single story of RED "making someone pay" for not staying in line. What do they have, some kind of hollywood "blacklist"?

Is this for real or just a conspiracy theory?

Gets weirder all the time here.

There's some very interesting posts from way-back-when!

Graeme

Two posts below yours in that thread is this quote:

"Under-promise and over deliver tends to deliver better results in my book."

I'll bet Jim wishes he had done a better job of disbelieving us overly-optimistic engineers and therefore ended up following that advice a little better.

Well, what about taking another twist in this thread. Who knows, perhaps the fellow in this article

feels RED is making progress far too quickly with Epic?

In fact, isn't it quite a good thing that Jim believes his engineers? Yes, engineers are overly-optimistic in predicting schedules, but on the other hand, once they realize having being too optimistic, they are also so pragmatic that they tend to do everything to minimize the delays and thus work like machines. I'd guess that's what has been going on at RED for some time now.
