Especially when we send a clip off the After Effects to maybe do something complex, we end up with a clip that chugs along at very low frame rates, as do image sequences from other software.

It would be great if we could opt to "Replace with Render". This would open up an encoder dialogue, where we could chose codecs, resolution and so on. The software would then render-out the chosen clip(s) and replace the clip on the timeline with that rendered-out version (say Cineform, or Prores - whatever we chose from what is available on our system). Later, we coudl right-click and "revert to source" if we needed to make changes.

I do this now all the time, but it involves more steps that take longer.

As a side-comment, I find the yellow line to sometimes be wee bit liberal - for example, if I load a sequence of 32bit 1080p Tiffs, the line will go yellow - not allowing me to press enter and get preview so that my edit can run smoothly - who has enough horsepower to really play an uncompressed 32 bit tiff sequence straight from the hard drive?

I'd say any HD still image sequence warrants a red line, as does any After Effects sequence.

i assume u r dealing with dynamic link? i think thats a great idea. i usually make sure everything is perfect in premiere before sending it off. i guess adding effects to a dynamic linked clip in premiere would be pretty hard on the system hence the slowdown. cant wait till they give us mercury in after effects.

as far as the yellow line - assuming your hardrives are not too slow i think the yellow line indicates when the video card can render any effects u apply to the clips in the timeline. The actual playback of the hd clips is performed by the cpu. in which case unless u have a supercomputer is very hard to do.

You can force Premiere to render the work area (from yellow to green). If you go to 'sequence' menu you'll find two commands (Render Effects in Work Area) which has "Enter" as a shortcut, and "Render Entire Work Area". The second one will force premiere to render the work area to the codec you specified in the Video Preview section of Sequence Settings. Now if your sequence is a R3D sequence you'll have only one preview file available (I Frame Only MPEG). But if you chose a sequence with Editing Mode to "Desktop" you'll have plenty of formats and codec available..

Hope this will help..
