I wonder what they are shooting THE HOBBIT films on?

Film most likely. If not, than MX. If it was Epic or MX though, we probably would have heard something by now. They are supposed to begin shooting in January or February correct?

I am not sure if they shoot that fast, but pretty quick for sure! cast is set, they just nailed down New Zealand yesterday, but I bet there is a lot of set building and the like to go first. I would love to see Jackson's visual style within fantasy combined with Red on this. Very interested!

Epics, on 3d rigs. They've been testing with them for a little while now.

Kule Gray.

would be epic (pun) if they did... But, on such a big budget picture, I'd be surprised if they are scheduled to shoot in February, that they'd be planning on doing so on a camera that is currently unreleased, and unfinished only a few months out from their shooting dates. Plus, taking into account what Jim has stated before that folks can shoot EPIC today if they shoot local to them, b/c they can provide support. But, providing it that far away from home base would probably be out of the question.

If release ready EPIC's were going to be here in a few weeks, then maybe it would be a possibility... beyond that, I don't see such a big project using something that would have possibly only just come out, that they haven't had proper time to prep with, or something that is still in unfinished form. But, who knows what goes on, is going on, behind the scenes? only those behind it...

I believe that EPIC can manage to get Alien prequels (Ridley Scott) alongside The Hobbits.
Mr. Scott also want to shoot in native 3D.

I am speculating here, of course, but I would bet if you were Peter Jackson and said to Jim you wanted to shoot your new, $500 million dollar film in 3D on Epic, there would be as much support, both local and US based, as you could ever want. It would be a serious piece of positive acclaim for RED if this were the case. Probably *the* most anticipated film in quite a while made by the guy that smashed all box office records and produced an amazing trilogy in LOTR.

I think Epic is a lot more functional/operational than a lot of us think. Kinda like the Death Star in Return of the Jedi.

Many rumors put Jarred and Jim in New Zealand a few weeks back for their "two week test". Whether that was, "Hey Pete, come check out the new EPICs!" or "Hey Pete, we want to show you the new EPIC and convince you it is a reliable camera for the Hobbit; and we will do whatever it takes to make it happen"... who knows. These are just the scenarios that played out in my head :)

Jarred has said that the TATTOO program is well underway, so...Either way, I would bet that: one, PJ currently has a TATTOO and has been testing it for several weeks; and two, RED obviously knows how significant it would be to have the Hobbit shot on RED.

I was under the impression that Peter Jackson was a huge fan and supporter of Red?

he is... but, that's not really the point I was raising.

Some people are gamblers, some are not. This is a gigantic budget, and (while I could be wrong) I would imagine there are other forces at play beyond the wishes of a director (whatever they may be).

Correct. How ever it could be delayed now due to all the politics regarding warner bros decision on whether or not to shoot the film in New Zealand or move it off shore.

Hopefully RED releases EPIC in time for PJ to make a desicion on how EPIC compares to film. Although, he normally leaves this kind of decision to his DP. Super good news for Red if Hobbit is shot on EPIC! I bet if the movie is shot on film, PJ will at least use it for some shots as he did with The Lovely Bones :D

Secret intel into the Hobbit... User since 2007 but only two posts... Kule Gray, are you, in fact, Sir Peter Jackson? Has your secret REDUSER alias finally been revealed? ;)

Just kidding.

Okay Guys, first thing Hobbit will be shot in NZ. It is confirmed now.
And EPIC is being seriously considered. Hopefully, we all will here something soon.

maybe im wrong, but to me, what camera PJ chooses on Hobbit will be something of a litmus test of just how much he likes Red. He's been so vocal since the beginning, but hasn't actually shot a full project on Red since 'Crossing the Line' and even came out and effectively said the original M chip wasn't to his standards.

No I understand that, my post wasn't in reference to your earlier one.

I kind of agree with you here but I also kind of agree with Jason's post above. It's great tech but untested and as Jason said Red support would be hard in NZ.

But it doesn't really address the question of why he wouldn't use a tried and tested Red One?

I think PJ will go with the Epic "Tattoo" or R1 MX. Pirates 4 is a big budget feature, I just don't see him not going with RED. It's just my guess, and hope. Question, are there other Warner Brothers films who have used R1 cameras?

It should be noted that the problems with NZ as the location were not Warner Bros. concerns. It was due to a pissing contest instigated by the Media and Entertainment Arts Alliance and the Screen Actors Guild. Both Australian entities representing actors... both organisations nearly cost our region the film. Stupid political grandstanding. I'm glad PJ told them where to stick it.

If Peter Jackson says he wants to shoot on EPIC, I have a good feeling he will be able to shoot on EPIC.
