  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Thought I recognized the blown highlights

I don't think anything in that film didn't look or feel exactly how they wanted it too.

They wanted a sharp, staccato, blown out look. They are more than happy to shoot with Red and have been big supporters of the camera, but they wanted a specific look for the film and they seemed like they got precisely what they were looking for.

Hey, I love it!

I think the look of the film was perfect for its content. It would be highly inappropriate to see clean, detailed and pretty images in the middle of Crank. Those cameras also have ergonomic benefits over something like a RED for much of the run'n'gun, place the camera in all sorts of absurd places, use crash cams liberally, etc. style of filmmaking.

I dont have an IMDB pro account but I assume you are talking about Crank 2?

It was shot on an XHA1 so ya, that explains it.

Yeah Crank 2 was shot on XHA1s and HF11s... looks pretty radical for what it was shot on both in terms of resolution and latitude (not in the blow-outs mind you, but skins and mids, which is where it counts). I'd love to have a few coffees (or pitches of beer) with the colourist (or even DIT or anyone that worked in postprod).

In the Crank 2 "trivia" section on IMDBPro
"Mark Neveldine and Brian Taylor shot 300 hours of footage in 30 days of filming." Sounds like an invitation to a migraine, sorting all that out. Lots of 1/2 second cuts in that film.
