  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

how to judge gamma on iMac with snowleopard?

Is it possible to see correct gamma with an iMac running snowleopard when
there's no slots for a matrox or AJA card and no PCIe ?

The ioHD connects to the host computer over Firewire 800.

The downside is that you are restricted to a ProRes based workflow. Outputs are 10 bit 4:2:2 from the ioHD, but the ioHD's connection with the Mac is ProRes only.

So, with file based workflows, its a pretty good monitoring solution.

If you really need to you can capture analog, HDMI and SDI sources.

That all said, the ioHD is nearly $2700 new.

You may want to look into a Mac Pro with a BlackMagic Decklink card.
 
You also have Matrox MXO option if you are okay with 8-bit.

Also, Snowleopard runs with 2.2 default, so use something like EyeOne and set the target to gamma 2.2. then your display stays at 2.2 as long as whatever app you are using don't change it.
 
Thanks Alexander, it's a little out of my price range right now. I've even considered switching to a used mac pro just to get that decklink card!

Thanks once again Kaku, I'm now taking a closer look at matrox options. Correct me if I'm wrong with my understanding ... but all the mxo2 options need PCIe or a mac pro for the card slot right?
And the one you are referring to is their older model that's just called "MXO"?

I'm talking specifically about "MXO" which is around for few years but not old, still is in the current lineup. MXO gets the picture from the DVI along with the controls through USB.

MXO can be used as two ways. One way is called mastering mode, which could be selected as video output in FCP, Color and so on. Another way is to act as the second desktop.
 
Another thing you can get is a scope outside of your editing system.
Scope function on monitors like TVLogic or Panasonic would be feasible to know you got the right gamma displaying, of course you can get better ones like UltraScope or real scope, too.
 
We'll I picked up an MXO and a 1080p Viewscan TV and I can't get the MXO to work on snow leopard. Also I noticed that none of the new easy setups it installs (v2.1.7 beta) on FCP have prores ... sigh

You have to get the latest driver for the MXO, probably the CD-ROM comes with the package is old. Which iMac do you have?

Aslo, the preset does not come with Prores, but you have have Prores timeline, then select the output to be uncompressed.
 
I think I have the latest version. 2.1.7 downloaded from here (link) dated March 2010. I haven't lost money yet as I have 14 days to return this setup so still testing.

Possibly one reason it has not worked is I'm using a DVI to HDMI connector on the output of the MXO and the HDMI goes to the 1080p viewsonic TV.

When I restart my mac the os background appears on the TV at the same time as the iMac prompts me to log into my account. Then as I login I see the desktop blue appear on the TV before it goes to black and a TV error message pops up saying OUT OF RANGE.

What I have not had time to try is the HDTV analog component video output (1080i 50, 1080i 59.94, 720p 50, 720p 59.94). Mainly because I was discouraged by my initial efforts.

I think that is indeed your problem. The DVI output of the MXO is intended to loop through to a computer monitor in 1920x1200 mode, while the SDI and component outputs are what sends a 1920x1080 signal. If your TV can't take a 1920x1200 signal, what you're doing won't work.
 
You would have to switch the MXO output as 1080 instead of 1920 x 1200.

Edit:do that in the system preference/mxo
