Anyway, I did not come to 'poop' (lmao) on anyone although I did find that pretty funny.

I asked some questions of RED in my ORIGINAL POST, albeit in an upset tone (felt justified at the time). Questions which were proved legitimate by being answered by Jim himself in another thread. When I read those answers I got peeved and posted a bit of a rant.

Then followed it two posts later with the apology quoted below.

Obviously Jim has made the right choice, but this is a forum and I vented here, in the most relevant thread I found.

HDRx is a real bonus to the cameras, something I am really looking forward to seeing more of. It's a shame it isn't an option not to have it and get a Scarlet sooner, but there you go, like many have said, Jim is primarily concerned with the optimum IQ and that is definitely a good thing.

The one thing I was really surprised by was that I thought this discussion was worth having but I was actually blocked from the forum for a week with the only reason being given as "shut up". I thought that was pretty shameful, to treat a professional future customer as trash like that.

Anyway, matter closed as far as I'm concerned.

That quote from Jim kind of wound me up, I apologise for my attitude in those later posts. But wow, what a disappointment. Genuinely feel like I have lost out on what was one of my favourite pieces of tech on the horizon.

Like I said earlier, maybe at some point I will get the kind of work that will require the EPIC as that still looks awesome.

These posts remind me of the discussions we had when we were all waiting for the RED ONE. People are getting antsy, and so little disagreements blow up into larger "issues".. Simply cause there's nothing else to do.

If Scarlet was out and shipping, there would be less complaining about price and marketing, since people would either buy one anyway, or buy something else.

Nevertheless, a schedule of some sort would be cool right about now...

A long time ago, I threatened to show Jim the art of "pistol whipping" if he did not get something out I wanted... I think it was the premiere drivers.

And since HDRX will be available, it would make nonHDRX cameras "end of life" in an instant.

I just don't understand why people have a problem with REDs decisions... They are looking out for us and giving us what they feel is the best possible solutions with the fewest quirks and problems.... And the best image quality.

Since I've now decided to get an AF100 I'm more or less okay with the Scarlet delays.

I'm planning a feature next year that I intend to shoot on the 100.

My "target" now is Scarlet S35 coming out by late 2011 or early 2012 so I can shoot my 2012 and beyond projects on it.

If RED somehow surprises everyone and announces the release date for Scarlet S35 to mid-2011, I'd be able to delay the feature for a few months.

But honestly, I don't see it happening.

I feel bad for our customers and our engineers. Customers have the right to feel disappointed for the delays and our engineers are working so hard to get this done. I set out an impossible task. What we are doing really is impossible, which is exactly the way I want it. But it takes a toll on everyone. Sometimes I don't sleep at night because of what I am putting everyone through... In the end, it will be worth it. In the meantime it is hell for all. Sorry about that.

Despite all the recent bitching I've done I have to say that I honestly appreciate this. It's honest and it's true along with his previous statement that started this thread. I'm far from an ass kisser and I won't start now, but these are all very legitimate reasons to be late. I'm a software developer (iOS) myself and I've realized that things always take longer than I think they will. And this project is far more complicated than the iphone games I write.

I'll try to be more patient and God Speed!

I live, work, sweat, bleed Red on Features and TV shows. as a DIT I like something to look forward to. for Red, finding the balance between traffic-making, marketing and manageable technical expectations.

I think MX Owners would be happier to get their money's worth while Epic is perfected.

Any "computer" (even ones with high end imaging sensors called cameras) function with two main parts. Software and Hardware. The hardware is the physical platform on which the software preforms its various (or single) functions.

So the hardware and the software works together to capture, process and store the images.

There are several million lines of code in an EPIC and Scarlet. No excuses... just fact. Everyone is working 24/7 with catnaps. We love the program and the opportunities. But we are guessing at when we will finish.

I am a defense cost analyst by profession. I'd like to give you a perspective on the implications of the above software requirement in cost and schedule. FPGAs and ASIC programming is among the most challenging programming there is, due to the timing (thread) and memory management, as well as probably logical and memory gate constraints.

This kind of programming typically requires more than 1 man hour per Source Line of Code (SLOC). That is just the Design, Code, unit Test, and Integration effort (DCTI). That effort is usually matched by an equivalent effort for architecture, configuration management, quality assurance, software to hardware integration, and qualification testing (non-DCTI costs).

At the usual rates, this usually means that the software costs $250 to $400 per SLOC (if it is new). The implication of Mr. Jannard's SLOC estimate is that if an integrated defense systems company were to write the several (let's say 3) million SLOC (3 MSLOC), the cost would be between $750M and $1.2B dollars. The development team would be over 300 people and the 47,000 man-months would require 152 months of schedule to complete (any compression of this schedule would increase cost).

The skill and commitment of the Red development team is no doubt keeping the cost way below this estimate, but at this point I can safely assume that Mr. Jannard has laid a sizable fraction of his personal fortune (see article on World's richest people http://www.forbes.com/lists/2006/10/S37W.html ) on the table to make this happen.

This is the kind of commitment and passion that re-builds economic powers. Imagine if the ~$2T in cash sidelined by business was being invested with similar purpose and passion.
