  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED Solid State Drive

they said in October but did not say what year. With thousands of cameras out there I with no options for media I hope it's soon.

I have Red Rams and Red Raids for rent.
Reserve one now, they are renting fast!

Also, wanting to purchase the SSD option asap. I know that Red must want it out at least as soon as I do but hoping that day is right around the corner since I have no idea.

From what has been said, the hold up may be partially due to waiting for FCC certifications.

FCC hold-up was on bomb evf.

As of now, there is no hold-up on the SSD module because they are not on sale. They have been announced at least. FCC could be the reason but that was never said in regard to the new media option. I think when they do go on sale is when they should be ready to ship more or less IMO.

checking the store daily... :)

And the RED Station modules. Not sure what's up with the RED Station, unless there was a problem with FCC certification. As for the Bomb EVF, the hold up was the certification and some part to go along with it. There was a comment about needing those parts or something to that effect. Hopefully soon for both.

As for the SSD module, I'm sure certification may be playing a role. I'm guessing that the SSD module for the DSMC line is the same PCB as for on the RED One. There's a chance that certifications or issues with the DSMC program / EPIC development could be a hold-up there. All we can do is speculate though. Jarred said SSD's hopefully sometime this month. It's only the 7th - still 3 more weeks to go in October. I can live with what I have for now; even though I lost a RED RAM to a watery demise last month. But I'll definitely need SSDs for the Epics when that day comes. I feel sorry for anyone buying a new RED One right now when the only options are 16GB CF or renting other media, maybe buying used media. I've noticed more RED-RAMs for sale over the past couple weeks though and prices are dropping. I think people are trying to unload before those SSD modules ship.

Yeah, the FCC hold ups seem like they have been holding up the majority of the crucial pieces and parts. I am still waiting on my CF modules, the Bomb, and the drives.

This is me. But I have been in line for a drive, which put us in the que for the SSD's. The process I use doesn't make using the cards to much of a burden. I've been able to rent drives if I need them. All in all, I just hope we get our SSD's soon. Will they fit in the same Cradle as the other drives do you think?

I'm beginning to wonder if the FCC certifications of all these parts are not tied together and dependent on functionality between modules, camera brains, etc.. That could explain all the delays right there. Anyway, all speculation and no real reason to keep torturing ourselves. I know RED wants to ship these products even more than we want to buy them.

As I understood it, all existing orders for Drives and RAMs would be filled, it was just going to take time. Unless RED told you so, I don't think you were put into any queue for an SSD. You should check with your bomb squad rep.

The SSDs are several times smaller than the current Drives / RAM's. They won't fit in the cradle. To use them on the RED One, you replace the CF module on the side of the camera with an SSD module and slot the SSDs in just like the CF card -- they're about 2.5X the size of a CF card.

Thank you for the information Jeff. Is that side panel for the SSD in the store already, or do you think it will come as a package deal when they start sending the drives. I am will go check out the store, I guess it might be something that wont enter the store until the drive is released. I just want to have everything on back order so I can use it right away.

Not in the store yet. Should be available to order at the same time the SSD drives are. SSD side module for the RED One I think is $1500 (ouch). SSDs will come in 64GB, 128GB and 256GB capacities. The 256GB ones are the best $/GB ratio, but are still a bit hard to bite off at $3200 each, I think that was the originally quoted price. On the bright side, they're super fast and work with Epic. You will have to also buy the 1.8" RED STATION module in order to read them into a computer. That part should be $250. It's in the store, but we can't actually order it or place a deposit yet.

I hope there is a release date for the SSD drive soon, I need some new drives...
