Question: why is there a Pro and "Not Pro" version of the I/O module?

I tried to find stuff on what the difference was but so much has been taken offline. I might can see the reasoning for a "non-pro" redmote in case you want to hand the Director or DP something that's much simpler than whatever the pro version offers (again, cant find the difference between the redmotes). But on the I/O module I can't imagine ANYONE wanting the "Not Pro" version, so why would Red make it? I'm not complaning or saying Red's stupid for this, I'm saying I must be missing something here. Of everyone I've talked to about the I/O, 100% say the only option is the Pro module.

Thoughts? Clarification from Red? Though it's been so long (about a year) since updated pricing and specs, maybe I'm asking the wrong questions, maybe the "non pro" I/O & Redmotes were deep sixed back in 09.

There is a Base version and a Pro version. There is not a Pro and "not-Pro".

Different sizes, different I/O, different price. i.e. modular camera, lots of choice.

Stuart, when you are trying to rent your camera, anything that's not the "Pro" version, is the "not pro" version.

Can you point me to, or repost, the differences in size and specs from the pro to base version of this? They seem to have disappeared from the Red site

EDIT: Another thought. Epic is the 'pro', with Scarlet being 'base' or whatever, so it seems the Epic stage packages should come out with the pro version, even if that means a price bump. Though again, I need to stare at the specs and talk amongst the people.

Thanks!

Stuart, will the Pro version allow 1080i native output by any chance?

I posted this question in another thread but it hasn't received any replies so I figured I'd try my luck here :)

I think this refers to the audio module only. The base version would be fine for many. More I/O options and full size XLR on the Pro instead of mini-XLR on the base. If you're recording double system with the base as guide track & backup, should be quite serviceable. The base might be slightly smaller, lighter, but I don't think the exact specs were published. You can "upgrade" to pro with credit for the base upon purchase. As I recall it was about a 1K difference. As always, subject to change. I'm sure we'll know more as possible delivery windows approach.

I agree with you Shawn, but we also have to think of others which might just be getting the Epic at the border of their affordability, so this could not be a good thing at all to make the Epic come out with all the Top of the Top options available, as they will ad up quickly making the Epic package passing the 40k bench mark quickly, which I will do on all my Epic cameras any way, however there could be many that can not do that, so they must be given the choice, for those of us that want the Top available accessories, we just simply choose to Upgrade them, Redmote for Redmote Pro, Base I/O for Pro I/O etc.

I will get the Pro I/O module for one of my Epics, but probably not for both. I will often only need the base module, or even no I/O module at all.

I believe it's been said that Stage 2 and 3 customers can opt to upgrade to the Pro I/O module for the difference in price.

Options are good.

As far as I recall, both versions provide HDSDI out, genlock, timecode, GPIO, and analog audio ins. Base version uses mini-XLR's and pretty much matches the I/O functions on a Red One.

The Pro version adds digital and analog audio in on full size XLR's and audio out as well. Maybe other features on the video and control side too, don't know.

Yes, the "PRO I/O Module" uses full size XLR inputs, adds a 5-pin XLR monitor output, plus 4 channel AES / EBU digital audio input and an extra Aux Power Out. Which also means it's bigger, heavier and more expensive than the "Base I/O Module"

I fill the same as you Jeff, but even so I will definitely get the PRO I/O Module on all cameras, as you never know, and just because some times I will use at list on of them with out any I/O at al, it does not means that at times I will have to use them all at once with the need for the PRO I/O module, so my suggestions would be for every one getting an Epic to upgrade to the PRO I/O module, unless they know for fact that the camera will never be used in a professional set up were such connections are a requirement.

We generally don't record audio in camera on the bigger shows but we definitely need the timecode in and power outs. What I really want is a "Studio" module that forgoes audio in completely and just gives me a true non drifting timecode lock (like a Lockit box) and 4 three pin lemo standard 12v power outs for the Preston, Cinetape and Transmitter.

A built in downconverter would be welcome too but I know Red's position on this.

What does the base I/O offer?

mini XLR like the RED ONE?
Lighter?
Two Channels?
Headphone out?
Weight difference?

Ditto. If design and specs are indeed locked (my presumption), then I'd like to know full rundowns, even if final pricing isn't known. Who knows, there may be new modules, maybe certain ones dont exist, hard to know. Hopefully when Red knows all of this for sure then new literature can be released.

Yeah. If you are stage two, this should be basic information.

Yea, it's been covered couple of times. Though it is becoming increasingly difficult to find things using search. Pretty much anything you search now pops up with a ton of posts. That and for this particular topic you can't search for "i/o" with the search function, word is too short:-P so a search for "i/o module" you'll end up with a search result for just "module"

great suggestion!!!
but one audio in would be cool for reference sound

right now i have attached a cinetape, wirelless ff, aja downconverter, (fucking canatrans) and a lock it

Thanks Stuart.

So nice to get it in one place from the source.
