Does anybody in the know, know how Fincher and team shot the sequences at the Rowing competition set in England. The long first shot I was on again and off again whether or not it was real, and decided that it was a vert sophisticated diorama. But hen this scene went on and on and I began thinking it was shot with lens similar to what Roger Deakins used in Assassination of Jesse James, with the hyper-real intensity enhanced by fast shutter speeds and ultra-sharpness amped up as computer generated F/X.

This is a very striking scene and would love to find that it was all done in-camera.

As a side note, how is it that filmmakers today can seamlessly integrate an actor in a very complex dual-role but still not make a character's computer generated breath not stop a scene cold because it is so obviously "fake?" I'd just rather they leave the breath out it.

Excellent. Thank you, Stacey.

There's an article on it in this month's American Cinematographer; RED apparently them with stripped down M-X bodies made of carbon fibre so they'd be light enough for filming on the boats (!)

Yes, the cold breath looks surreal. Remember wishing this was some odd joke in reference to the preceding scene: "Caribean Night" with Niagara Falls projected on the wall, prompting Mark to storm right back out.

Not that I'd get the joke, though.

Henley race, yes, awesome sequence.

We put them on a diet and pulled out even more weight elsewhere to get them light so they could fly on the boat rigs.

and because people keep asking.. no carbon R1's are not for sale :)

I also noticed the fake cold breath.

I just saw "Let Me In," (my favorite movie of the year thus far) and they make it a point to have one character's breath appear while the other's doesn't, and I didn't even notice either until several scenes latter because it was done so well-- and on a much smaller budget. I'd think that Fincher, being the perfectionist that he is, would never stop to he got it right, because his two characters frosty breath outside the dorm at night, is so obviously phony, and alarmingly so, that it is almost a parody.

Did you see the original version "Let The Right One In"?

Did you see the original version "Let The Right One In"?

I did. It, too, was pretty great. I believe the reason they made Let Me In in America and with the same atmosphere and tone and the Let The Right One In, was because it was so pitch perfect with nothing to improve on except they could make it more accessible to American audiences. They could introduce the concept of a smart, methodically paced vampire movie to an audience who flat out refuse to watch a movie, no matter how good, with sub-titles, and they could do it without insulting anyones intelligence. And they nailed it. Let Me In is clearly a labor-of-love.

I have yet to see it. Let the right one in was one one of the best films of the year so I'm glad it was handled well...But with the people involved in Let Me In has made me optimistic. Even with it being a Hammer Horror is a great start.

Javier love your Avatar, great film.

I've been really hesitant with this flick. I loved the original and was questioning why they would do it again... without the same director. But it's nothing new. Scorsese did it with The Departed, but the original was kinda hard to find for American audiences. I guess I'll see it. Thanx

I was hoping someone would catch it. Le Samourai floored me...and I still can't put my finger on why.

My thoughts exactly, why did the breath suck so bad?

I only noticed it because it reminded me of a beer commercial I DPed

http://vimeo.com/10636210

my compositor said he did this breath in about 2 hours at 1am and was drinking. (I wonder if that was Finchers approach?)

IMHO this breath looks about on pars with Finchers

I am "the breath" of "Titanic"...actually there were many people that did contribute, but i was hired to go into a cold room, get cold, then come out into a less cold room and breath leonardo and kate's lines...and then do a lot of other stuff with my breath...(breath fast, for a long time, blah blah blah), there were so many people on the film that i did not even get a credit, although i did make $600.00 for 10 hours which seemed like a lot back then!

i was coordinating at the time and a PM that i worked with a lot, became a Vfx Producer and worked at R&H or VIFX can't remember, anyway, he needed someone, not sure i qualified for any other reason other than i was the guys friend and i was available....

breath on!....i still have the little tube covered in black velvet they gave me to hold that all my breath came out of and onto film.

Cool! "Breath Double" or "O2 Stand in" what a great credit that would be! :emote_popcorn:

From what I understand, Vivian Leigh would have appreciated one of these for Clark Gable in GWTW.
