Oct 1 is here and news is out there will be a Storm class at FXPHD this term and I will be teaching it. I am really excited about this term and being able to work with The Foundry and FXPHD as well as RED on getting out a killer Storm class.

Take a look at the class outline here

http://www.fxphd.com/courses#STM101

If you have never been involved with FXPHD it really is a great community and resource for RED owners, ops and anyone working in visual effects, DI and post production.

If you guys wouldn't mind some input about what you would like to see I can try to get some requests incorporated into the classes.

Anyone interested in STORM and FXPHD should absolutely take this.
Being that Jim is on the dev team for STORM he's the best guy for the course and kudos to Mike for snagging him for this.

I'm stoked for Nov. 1st when it's avail...

Course outline looks good. FXPHD is highly recommended more a number of different reasons. Glad to see they got the right man for the job.

By class 10, would you be able to sneak in a few bits about the future vision for STORM?

I'll probably take this - I like their classes, often have them running in the background while I do other mindless taskies. There's always a bit of new stuff to learn.

Yes will we definitely be looking at the Storm roadmap later in the term so any new developments will be discussed.

Very interested in learning Storm as I'm getting for our systems in Italy, but please excuse mi ignorance ;) is this a Linda.com type of site to learn via video classes?

I'm diving in to learning Editing with Adobe CS5 Suit and FCS, on my system together with Resolve and Storm, so like to get as much in to it as possible.

Ketch FXPHD is on a totally different level .
FXPHD is geared toward all areas of Visual Effects, Production and Post Production . With things relating to Color grading, working within high end Digital Cinema (RED especially) , Visual Effects (Nuke, AE, PFTrack etc).
The courses are all taught by working professionals in different fields.
You get a great mix of fundamentals ,all the technical information you can handle as well as the creative aspect in the classes .
If you go to the class descriptions you can get a sense of the what each class will be covering and preview 2 of each class before locking in your choice of classes (3 classes + plus the bonus background fundamentals)

You can check out a little overview video of the courses and different topics covered from this past July 2010 term .

If you have any other questions about how FXPHD works to don't hesitate to ask .

Hey Ketch,

In general yes.

Both are good, but in my opinion they are pretty different things.

(I've got a membership at both places)

Lynda.com in more classic didactic training. Generally a step by step walk though of the interface of a particular program. That is a generalization, but it is generally true.

fxphd is composed of one long segment per week on the topic of the course. In general the teachers have a ton of real word experience and it shows. It is more of a practical approach.

fxphd is much more vertical in it's offerings, for example Lynda.com isn't going to cover high end tracking software.

The biggest difference is at fxphd there are forums where you can interact with the instructor and fellow students. This can be super helpful, and has been for me in the past, but to be honest, I find I get busy and struggle to get all the courses completed during the quarter.

Not a big deal as the videos are up for quite a while, but you only have access to the forums for that specific class, and therefore to the instructor during the active quarter.

That said, it's a huge plus on the fxphd side.

Both are good, but if I had to chose one or the other I'd pick fxphd.

And Jim, I'll be in your upcoming class. :-)

Cheers,

Steve

Thanks for the added notes on fxphd.
Looking forward to seeing you in the forums.

Sorry Ketch how could I forget the forums probably the biggest feature of fxphd is being able to interact with your peers and friends on the forums for feedback.

Hi Ketch,

I've currently finished my second term at FXPHD, and all I can say it's the best place for high end training.

As others mentioned you have a forum where you and your colleagues can ask questions to the professor or to each other.

When you commit to the classes you can choose 3 classes from all available (and can preview all the first 2 classes of all courses), plus you get the Background fundamentals that are great.

There are 10 classes that come each week on a certain day, and you usually get 40minutes per week (I have gone thru some classes that gave more than an hour). But since it's from industry's professionals, it's not like those step by step guide's saying which button to press. It's more like transferring their knowledge to you or something like it =P

For you I believe you would be interested in their new Resolve for Mac course, as well as this Storm and there's an intermediate Premiere CS5 course.

There's really no mistake if you take the classes!!!

Chris great to hear . Im excited to teach it.

Keep an eye out for the O week preview class coming this week.

I was surprised at first to see that FXPHD was offering a class on Storm in a pre-release state. Very cool. And then, I wasn't so surprised. See, this is the way Mike John and Jeff roll at FXPHD. Very worth the time and expense to take FXPHD courses. I look forward to this one, and Jim, I look forward to meeting the man behind the tweets. :)

This is the first term out of the last 3 or 4 that have let my FXPHD subscription lapse. I really wanted to do the courses but I have just been so busy I haven't been able to keep up with classes at all.

I'm considering just signing up and downloading the classes anyway but I know I'd miss out on so much by not managing to take advantage of the forums properly. Is the Storm class still rolling. I heard it was planned to start a little later to time it with the Storm Beta release so people could play along?
Perhaps you all got to be Alpha testers?

Ok, so if I subscribe to FXPHD for this term it will happen but later on? Not postponed for next term?
