  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

iPad as viewer?

LiVE PLAY is looking really interesting, Michael - looking forward to see where this goes. Can you let us in on how you're getting the video from the camera to the laptop. I see a small transmitter on the top of the camera. Could it be the Teradek Cube, possibly?

Hi Tony,
Can you briefly outline how Air Video fits into your on-set workflow? I gave it a whirl today...works as advertised. Are you posting circle-takes into a watch folder for people to grab and watch as needed?

The workflow I'm currently doing is ingesting everything into Redcine-X and transcoding dailies into 720p MPEG4. That is being dumped into a folder on which I've set-up Automator to grab everything and make AppleTV and iPad friendly files by using my Elgato Turbo H264 USB stick. That is automatically saved into iTunes, which syncs up with an AppleTV (for the director in his room) and then I set up Air Video to look into that folder. Quite simple, but it works beautifully.

I would love to know the cost of this sort of system. Also portability.

Portability is what you saw - totally portable from a MacPro in some configurations down to a laptop or Mac Mini.
There are a few systems that can transmit files from the RED camera, we have used the BOXX Meridian and Teradek CUBE. Both work great, but have slightly different strengths and weaknesses based on the need of the production.
As far as price, we don't sell this version of LiVE PLAY, but we will be selling a simpler version soon on the iTunes App Store. The full version of LiVE PLAY is bundled for free with our OUTPOST carts as an added benefit to using our data systems. Because we have custom software and hardware on both ends (Camera, CPU and iPad) we are only able to rent the system. Training on the system is free - we do about 1 training session per week for people interested in utilizing these products.

thanks Michael for posting this. I see now that the app i've been designing is similar in that they both do metadata and viewing, but is so drastically different i feel we'd have little crossover in use.

the thing im impressed with is how you managed to know that the last take was x01 c11 immediately after it was recorded over HD-SDI (since you said it'd be available immediately after 'cut'). I didnt know this info went across the hd-sdi stream. or do you have someone manually taggin the titles of the clips over on the laptop?

LiVE PLAY = :emote_head_explode:

Quick question, probably follows Shawn's Q - how robust is the R3D filename tracking as in if the AC decides to change the roll/mag,camera,L/R number do the changes automatically update in LiVE PLAY or do you need to manually update?

Keep on rockin Michael :)

All the best,

The file-naming it not entered by hand at all - it's completely automated and based on what the camera is actually set to. The software/hardware components are slaving to the camera, which imbeds the name & TC into the bit stream automatically for you. This makes for a 0% chance of a naming mishap.

There are two products right now that we've tested and they are Boxx Meridian and Teradek Cube. They both have different strengths and weakness, which slightly changes their respective applicability, but overall, both systems are powerful, robust, and make this camera more powerful. I love it when new tools keep older tools "fresh."

thank you very much guys...
thank you mr. cioni looking for those carts soon...we'll be in touch
best,

Disclaimer I work here, but if you use MediaSilo we just submitted an ipad native dailies viewer to the app store for content clients put on our site. We do server side encoding to make sure it is HTML5 compliant, 720 looks fantastic, and can be viewed over g3 (or wifi) pretty easily. You do need to get it to H.264 or another bandwidth friendly codec, we do not yet support RED native, and unless you have a very fat pipe uploading 10GB+ files is not the best thing to see your stuff fast. Check out our site at www.mediasilo.com. Also we already can view through safari on iphone & Ipad, but will be releasing native apps by next week for a better user experience.

I've been watching the MediaSilo guys for a while - pretty slick stuff actually.

Thanks for the kudos Mark, as a subscription SaaS we have to work twice as hard as vendors that once you buy their gear you are on your own. And we are constantly innovating and setting up custom workflow's for clients to keep them happy.

As an update our Ipad app V1.0 is now approved and in the App Store. It only works if you have a mediaSilo account, but if you want to demo it you can sign up for a home free account and give it a try with a small amount of media. It is the best dailies viewer and user experience I have seen on the market, and no cable syncing needed, just a decent G3 connection or better.

I encourage everyone to give it a try, once you do you will wonder how your busy clients lived without it. In V2 we will have a download feature for offline viewing (AKA the redeye from LA to NY without a WiFi connection), and the collaboration aspect of our service as well as tagging and metadata searching.

Best,
Erik
