  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Shane Hurlbut on glass.... opinions?

I think he's just after a more natural image (closer to how the human eye sees the world), as opposed to an unnaturally sharp image.
 
I get what he's saying about softer vs hypersharp, but I think it depends on the look you want. It's nice to have options...
 
It a shame really, that this video is gone.
I'd like to hear his argument.

I have my own opinions.

The transcript isn't that exciting. Tons of quotes out of context. He calls the MPs "shit" but doesn't say why; the rest is less inflammatory even though it's edited to appear as outrageous as possible.

He seems to be recommending lenses appropriate, in his mind, for digital capture (5D?). He says he did a test and only the Leicas looked good to him. Oddly, he cites their lack of contrast and softness as a good thing. He goes on to say he's using really old, soft, single coated lenses specifically for their lack of contrast and organic look. Weird that he'd group those with the Leicas (which are probably technically superb) but, again, all the quotes are out of context.

He's not the most articulate or soft-spoken guy, but uhh...he has a point and he's obviously very talented. He knows what he wants, nothing wrong with that unless context is removed and a video is put online... Seems like "clinical" detail will hurt your image, induce aliasing, etc. on a 5D. A softer lens looks nicer and compensates for the poor DR. Not sure why he cited the Leicas as having less contrast, but I haven't used them so I'm sure he knows what he's talking about, the video just doesn't make it clear.

Move along, nothing to see here... He's just sharing the results of some lens tests, probably for dSLRs, in rather emphatic terms.

I have some new in the box Vivitar lenses (M42 with a canon ef adapter) that I got at the swap shop a couple months ago. I was going to sell them for $50 each but now I think I should be able to get $2K or more. :-)

Transcript? Anyway, the video was pretty seamless. However, it definitely did not show everything that was going on. May as well have been quoting him out of context. Like I said in my previous post, I would have loved to have been there to hear the full exchange. There's obviously more that the video did not show and something seems to have set him off. If there is a transcript of the video, it would only do a disservice to anyone who reads it and to Mr. Hurlbut.

But whatever... Opinions, noses and asses and all that..
 
Someone asked for a transcript of the video, so I was referring to the hypothetical one... Should have put the term in quotes.
 
Shane has apparently been pretty focused on getting results from DSLRs lately. Based upon the comments here I would also guess that was the context from which his remarks were taken.

If anyone is interested I have a set of a rehoused Leica by Van Diemen. They are all marked with the VFG logo which means they were especially picked up for that London company (went out of business some years ago) and they are color matched.
The set consist of 10 lenses 15mm T3.9 19mm T3 21mm T4.5 24mm T3 28mm T3 35mm T1.6 50mm T1.6 75mm T1.6 100mm T2.8 (macro) 135mm T2.8 (macro).
Not many DPs use them but whenever I put them on a camera, 35mm, Alexa or Red, I can see the difference...
I think Shane Hurlbut was very emotional in his saying but then again this what the Leicas make you feel...emotional.
The set is available for anyone who desires to shoot with them.

The lenses and me located in Israel.
Just had a great shoot with DP Glynn Speeckaert who used these fantastic lenses on a four days commercial.
Being in Israel lenses are not so accessible...but if anyone wants to rent them for a long term feature... something can be worked out.

I like Leica a lot, but generally feel that Shane is not exactly a genius, and really don't care what he thinks either way.
