RED Lens was used three weeks ago, and worked fine.
Lens was stored in pelican case, aperture open and zoom set to 18mm focus set on infinity.
Took it out a couple of days ago mounted it on camera then zoomed out to 50mm and then tried to go back to 18mm and it stopped at 40mm. Now only moves between 40-50mm. Seems like something blocking it internally.

Anybody else experience this? Any solutions-ideas?

Thanks
Puven

I've had something similar happen (jammed at 32mm for me). My lens was still under warranty when it happened and RED were able to get it repaired for me.

internal hardware loosened. It happens sometimes.
lens need disassembly and tightening the internals.
I have done a few...

Same here, i think i have no choice and send it back to RED

ahhh yeah!!! This is a well documented issue with this lens and should be quickly resolved by Red.

Mine is stuck at 25mm.... out of warranty... unfortunately I think I have to pay for the repair. A few existing threads discuss this. I called up Carlos Prio when this happened to me and sure enough he reported the same issue. I'm only pissed that I have to pay for it and it's no fault of my own. The lens is poorly designed.

There is nothing to get upset about- it's not that unusual that things get loose. All lenses need maintenance- some more than others. Anyway- it's not a major job or expense.
let me know what the charge is privately and maybe I could save you some money on this repair.

Yeah that's the thing... RED won't tell me what the charge is. I've emailed asking about the general price and they say I have to ship it in to get the price of the repair. PM me your price please.

Puven, if you would like to send your lens in for evaluation and repair, please email me at RMA-at-RED-dot-com and we can get this taken care of quickly.

If anyone else has any questions in regards to a repair, you can also contact me through the same email.

Ours did exactly the same thing. Stuck at 40mm. It costs us under $500 to fix it from RED.

Thanks Maz... It's great to know how much it costs for the repair.

Ironically, I paid $419 for the Sigma 18-50 EF mount (same optics) and never had a problem using it on the birger with nice follow focus.

I know there's still some difference (stepless iris for one), but it does point up one of the downsides of more expensive gear - maintenance is also a significant expense. The old rule of thumb when I did more rental and facility work was to allocate 5 to 10 percent per year for maintenance.

Thanks for all the responses.

And yes it is good to know how much it will cost to repair before sending it half way round the world.

Maybe a thread could be started with past repair costs of RED gear for us to reference to.

Thanks Brian; the lens is out of warranty so I'm going to see if I can get it serviced here in Australia; if not I will send it to RED.

Mine doesn't stop but it catches at about the halfway point in the zoom. Strangely, only when it is mounted on the camera.
