  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Look clarification!!??

I am working on a project and I have applied a look with no intention of using it, it has been applied to make the director content.

Here are the items I have made adjustment to:

Toe
Shadow
Sat
Exp

Do these items have any effect on the raw? It is my understanding that these are all metadata items, just want to clarify.

Nothing is baked into the .r3d.

The only things you won't be able to change are the recorded area/resolution, and the level of compression you set (Redcode).

Yes, those too. And time code, and camera operating (note - bumps in dolly tracks ARE baked in, we told Red to "turn this off" but they don't seem to listen to their user base).

In that a LOOK can affect the video levels yes, and therefore the histogram.

But the RAW exposure tools (traffic lights, goal posts and red sizzle overlay) are just that - RAW, and not affected by any of these things.

Yup, but...

An example:
A "dark" look will often in a practical situation make the DP expose higher and vice versa, thus affecting lighting, ND and T stop used, and then again affecting what is recorded in the RAW.

It could also distort the judgement as to wether there is "enogh" detail in the shadows to get a shot, on an outdoor shoot, while on a flatter look, one could more objectively judge wat's in there.

But these are different and partly conflicting needs and highly relative to what kind of workflow and production you are shooting for...
