Greetings,

I was hoping to find some peoples feedback when shooting RED ONE for motion and stills use. I goal is to shoot an eyewear campaign with RED one and allow client to walk alway with motion for web use. I would like want to be able to pull nice clean sharp stills for printing in magazine...any links or reference would be greatly appreciated as well.

Cheers!

If talent is moving you're going to get motion blur unless you shutter down to a faster shutter speed, but then your motion footage changes its look. It's always going to be compromise to use the same footage for both. IMO grab a Nikon and shoot some stills on the same set with the same lighting in between takes. I do it this way - I like the results much better.

Thanks Richard,
yeah thats my concern, I might just have to shoot motion and then go back and shoot stills...or find some happy medium. I am getting CookeS4 primes and I prefer to keep the glass for the still aspect of the shoot as well. I look forward to shooting a DSMC but until then I got to work with whats available!

If you shoot from a tripod there are often quite a few frames in there that are usable. But as mentioned above, all depends on the movement of the talent. If he/she is moving slowly (having a conversation for example) there are usually a few moments where they move even slower. We've just taken a few stills from a movie and send them out to magazines, and I have to admit it took a bit of search. And it's quite often where the perfect moment is ruined by strong motion. So if you want to be sure shoot dslr, if you want the exact same look, search through your footage. It may surprise you.

Thnkas Henk, yes I feel there will be a lot of searching. The motion aspect is almost secondary to the stills so if anything I will just have to slow down the movement and increase the shutter. 1st time I will be using RED for stills so I am jumping right in there.

Really wish I had an EPIC for this shoot coming up...would be the ideal choice for campaign that is asking for stills and motion. I will have a 7D on set, it has a PL mount so I will be juggling.
