  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Extra $1000 (more or less) for HDRx on Scarlet?

I'd wait to hear directly from Jim on how much of a delay he would expect and if a module option is even possible.

LOL...LOL...HA..HA..HA:lol:....Jim?...you mean 3k for 3k jim?...jim that said the scarlet would be out by last summer jim...the jim that said that these cameras would be out by now jim?....Jim hasn't been very reliable on dates lately.:cuss:

remember who's house you're in man.
Calling out a well liked/respected billionare badass... maybe not a good idea Mr. Internet Tough guy.

I'd like to see it in the S35 brain, but keep it out of the fixed to get it to market ASAP.

I'd pay extra easily, even if I had to wait another month or so. DR is really important to me, more than resolution.

Lots of speculation on delay times and module possibilities. I'd wait to hear directly from Jim on how much of a delay he would expect and if a module option is even possible.

Otherwise, I say keep the 2/3 the way it is currently moving, and offer HDRx™™ as an option for 2/3 2.0 and S35. Those who want it, sell their old brains and upgrade.

I don't think i said anything that would indicate that I was trying to be a "Internet Tough guy"..wise guy maybe... Internet Tough guy...nah!

Here's my take on HDRx for Scarlet... I don't think it needs to be there on the S35 version. Keep the price point for the S35 Scarlet low and leave the performance features for Epic.

As for 2/3" Scarlet -- YES! HDRx most definitely. A fixed-lens Scarlet with HDR ability would become the most sought-after ENG and documentary camera out there.

This is citing facts not in evidence.

Something smells fuddy here, doesn't it...

What!? Where have you guys been? Fuddy? Really, Martin?

Here's a fact: this camera has been delayed for well over a year. Every time a new feature is announced, the release date gets pushed farther and farther out. I'm stunned that I seem to be the only one that remembers this.

With the history that this program has, do you really expect people to believe that the timeframe for adding in another ASIC, a new board stack and anything else is somehow predictable at this point?

If everyone wants HDR on the Scarlet Fixed, that's great. But it will delay the camera big time. Sorry guys, but I have history on my side on this one.

I believe HDR would benefit mostly 2/3 Scarlet, its a smaller sensor, it has a fixed autofocus lens, perfect for EFP/ENG and documentary work, all situations where controlled light is sometimes difficult or impossible, if you are looking into revolutionizing the way films are done, bringing HDR to this format is up there as a must have feature. I can´t imagine why a 2/3 sensor with such a great lens as the 8x is should be without HDR if that can be done. if it's too long to wait 6 months more for this, is it too long to be years behind in personal growth and professional goals for not having it?

Please include HDR in scarlet 2/3.

Please let the dream run closer to the solution.
In Portugal we say, that would be like dying close to the shore.
Magalhães crossed the Pacific not knowing when he would find fresh water.
We know but we still think of not going!?
Courage.
Thank you.

I'm another one with mixed feelings on the issue. I'm in line for stage II, so I'll have HDR capability. I work in high end corporate video mostly, but want to offer clients a tiered cost structure. For this reason, I still shoot a lot of my lower end shoots on HVX. I'd like to replace that with a fixed to keep costs down. I'd rather just have scarlet fixed without HDR, as I will mostly be shooting talking heads in a controlled lighting environment. I just don't see the need for HDR on that camera, at least in my situation. I'd also prefer not to wait for a redesign of the camera's intervals. The module option sounds like the best route, if possible.

Get the fixed out the door, as is. Add hdr to the s35, if possible, as that group would be more willing to add the 1k to the price. The whole Epic and Scarlet lines are already amazing, and I just want both ASAP!

HDRx as an add-on module for Scarlet would be cool. Perhaps if it could be a smaller module that could fit onto the camera without the module adapter, it would be great. Or mounted on the side -- perhaps incorporate it into a side SSD + HDRx module?

I have no opinion on the 2/3" since I'm not buying it. But I would absolutely most definitely say yes to it being added to the Scarlet FF35.

So how much extra would it be for FF35 scarlet? $3k? The FF35 scarlet wouldn't be delayed that much anyway since it's already 2 years late. .

Yes I would definitely and gladly buy an S35 Scarlet with HDR. The $1000 you pay upfront will pay for itself the moment you start shooting. You'll need less setup for both actual production and post.

Since the FF35 Scarlet is supposed to be based on the upcoming Monstro sensor, I think that would mean a whole new set of considerations. But I do agree. It needs HDRx, or whatever the equivalent would be on that sensor.

Why not offer two options when purchasing ? one with; one without, would solve the problem.
HDR and the fixed scarlet would be a great all round camera, I for one would pay an extra 1,000

Just a thought Jim, I want to go for the SSD option for my fixed scarlet and S35. Having read most of the threads on this topic I think most people feel the same. Why not go the whole Hog, offer a 1.8 SSD drive 120- 256gb and the SSD unit for 2,000 (ish) as an alternative to the flash card module.
Also I noticed Maxx Digital are producing an amazing Mobile Rocket Raid why not bite the bullet and add a 1.8" SSD reader to this unit, it would mean no extra cables and power units attached to the Mac Pro and would make it a complete field offload and editing solution. I am not sure if this unit can be battery powered via 4Pin XLR or a Hypermac type battery but this is exactly what I have been waiting for the last four years.
Don't get me wrong I love the Red Station but it is more cables and power supply's to deal with in the field.

Either way thanks for giving us these choices Jim

This is classic "Mission Creep".

Scarlet was supposed to keep its CF card slot. If you're adding in HDRx™ then why not add an SSD module to the fixed while you're at it. Since you're adding a new board, add the SSD and expand the size of the fixed Scarlet brain even larger than it is currently. But wait, you still need to add a new Asic to meet the start-up goal.

We're all chasing a ghost camera that has yet to find a factory, if I'm reading between the lines correctly. We're looking at a massive delay of at least nine months to a year, easy. Remember that Scarlet must be launched in high volumes. A new design means factory ramp up time, a Beta test period of months and a massive accumulation in a warehouse before FED EX even gets their hands dirty. Based on proven historical facts, this camera is facing a mounting delay.

All this excitement over a feature that was just proven. What other "yet to be discovered improvements" will we vote to add in the intervening time? The Scarlet you all say you want is called Epic.

Personally, I would go for the HDRx™/60fps for $1,000+ extra, for sure. It would have a significant impact on my work as I would be using HDRx™ mode often (travel documentaries, no studio lights, lots of urban nightscapes), so of course it's worth it to me.

Would it be worth a delay? No. I would rather shoot with a non-HDR Scarlet for a year and then buy an HDR Scarlet or even an Epic, rather than wait an extra six months to get my hands on a Scarlet at all. I'd be embarrassed if I had to tell my clients there's been yet another Scarlet delay!

I think the Scarlet will eventually get:

HDRx™™
An S35 sensor
1-250fps
higher datarates
larger body
and a price increase to $28,000

and maybe a new name.... Epic sounds pretty cool.
