diROOM just got our DaVinci Resolve after an epic journey across UK.
I worked with scratch, baselight and speedgrade, but have no experience on DaVinci, apart from seeing it at the roadshow.
Here are first impressions...
INSTALLATION:
System:
Mac 2009, 8-core, 3.0 Ghz, 16MB RAM, 3x2TB SOFTRAID 0
1. Slot, QUADRO FX 4800
2. Slot, RedRocket
3. Slot, GT120
4. Slot, Decklink HD extreme
Tangent Wave, Cinetal 10bit, HDMI 1.3 Optoma projector
The DaVinci DVD seems to be burned, not pressed so I copied it onto the drive before installing. Dongle attached to USB port.
No issues with installation. Redrocket came a bit earlier, newest build, newest firmware installed. Swap of fibre channel card, installation of softraid...
After reboot, Decklink firmware upgrade came up as well as cuda upgrades, no issues with execution.
FIRST LAUNCH & Project setup:
Nice and very well thought GUI, divided into "rooms", that you enter as you go along the grading process.
The initial project setup is very easy and the GUI really helps there. Framerate, resolution for work space, tape, project etc.
Media selection:
Drag and drop does not seem to be en vogue with daVinci, neither is "select all" via apple+a. One adds media from the browser into the media storage.
Unfortunately, this does not "drill down" directories, which is not the best thing for RED footage.
CONFORM:
We started very nasty and threw a 100minute EDL, shot on 5D at DaVinci, edited on FCP. The 3600 EDL does not seem to recognize the filenames in the comments, so you end up with a timeline, that has correct edits, but does this only on the first file it finds.
As a lot of projects are done on HDSLRs lately, that do not generate timecodes in the original files, and are edited on FCP, it would be helpful, if daVinci would understand FCP xmls.
If a script can conform a FCP timeline via XML and lua into RedCineX timeline flawlessly, so should davinci.
h.264 codecs seem to be heavy on any system. The project crashes FCP regularly and daVinci seems to struggle as well. We had about 15 crashes during the tests.
I really hope, that the EPIC is out soon, and we do not have to deal with this "formats" so much.
Next was a RED clip test. No issues here. Acceleration via RR, on cinetal 10bit duallink... sweet.
GRADING:
We did not have too much time here, more tests tomorrow, but again, the GUI makes for a very organized experience...
I just saw an update on the BM page, so there might be some bugfixes for the mentioned glitches...
... more tests after some hours of sleep...
Please post any questions or things you want me to try out.
We will be testing and grading a feature next week.
If you are in London, feel free to come by and have a look and a (after hours) hands-on.
This shall be fun.
