  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

STORM by The Foundry

Uli, I think you guys would be better off finding the deal of ebay. If it is really impossible, let me know. Maybe we can exchange something instead of sending money.

Like what Kaku Ito? How's Shibuya? Lim

looks like several good options for obtaining useable USB monitors - thanks to Kaku for looking into it and for everyone who provided links...scopes alone are worth the price, comparable to blackmagic ultrascope for about the same price and no need for USB 3.0. STORM is going to be amazing.

Did some looking around and there's quite a few USB monitors out there for smaller sizes, but at lower resolutions (800x480, etc..). This one looks pretty good and is cheap -- 9" 1024x600 and can be bought from Amazon w/ free shipping.

the 5th review down says

1) Uses alot of CPU. I

Umm... That's pretty much to be expected. After all, it has to emulate another video card within software and then send an image over USB. All these USB monitors out there are going to be CPU intensive somewhat. Only way to know if it works for you and your intended applications is to try it out. Personally, the only reason I'd go the USB route is if we're talking the third display connected to a laptop.... But that's just me. There's plenty of compact monitors out there that have HDMI, DVI and other common inputs.

I'd still be interested in a USB monitor at the 10" or smaller size, with something close to 720p resolution, for times when I could offload something to a third portable display. Especially if it's around $150 or less. Other than that, I'm not sure I see the attractiveness of a USB display...

Once USB3 is more mainstream, I'm sure we'll see more monitor and video products as the bandwidth will be there to give full HD resolutions without compression and even embed GPUs within the display devices for downstream processing instead of doing it all in software on the host system.

I've tried to do the "Buy or Evaluate" thing to register for the preview, but it keeps going back to the front Storm page...
Anyone have any luck with that?

Can't do it yet. It's not available until November.

Hey Peter,

In the feature list of the STORM from the Creative Grading section, it says "Effects work on user configurable image ranges". Does this mean it act as secondary color grading feature?

Hey Kaku, we will be posting soon the demo online, so everyone can get better idea. The feature You mention - basically most effects can be limited to a specific luma or color range. I like to call it "one-and-halferies" :D

About the USB monitor - the main reason for me to use it is that "normal" monitors will require direct power source - therefore limiting the use of the laptop in a true portable power-independent configuration. I can literarily pull out the laptop on a plane without any power source, connect the USB monitor and work with the STORM for about 5 hrs. On the top of the range 17" i7 You got for me I do not notice any degradation in performance with the USB monitor - I absolutely love it. In fact, when I get back to Tokyo - I want to test with You at the MUSETEX office configuration with two, or even three of these external monitors - to extend the STORM's desktop beyond the limit of the 17" display's 1920x1200 resolution...

I miss You guys!

Peter

One and halferies....that's funny. So that would be color/luma selection only for now then but that is great because even without such thing, from RCX experiences I can imagine there could be so much more done to manipulate the colors.

We can clearly see what the TF's planning and the strategy of how they have developed the STORM up to now and in the future on above link (STORM DNA post). It's amazing how these things are totally described as how you explained to me few month ago. Let's post what we can provide as services in the Japan forum and get more jobs!

I already translated the features of STORM and posted it on R|C.

Great news! Any idea when?

Is the Foundry aware that, right now, there is a MASSIVE need for a tool that can help to organize/view/delete R3D files on PCs, due to a lack of a Quicktime R3d proxy codec? This feature alone would cause me to purchase STORM, just so I could browse and delete and sort my R3D files efficiently and conveniently.

Tom,

check this link on TF explaining the strategy of STORM and how they approach the development in multiplatform. You will feel more comfortable I think.

Meryem, Peter worked hard to help The Foundry on the Scope portion. That's his baby.

oh, I know and huge thanks to Peter for all he has done to push the RED system forward...I was just concerned about finding a delivery system to take advantage of all this innovation, but the group seems to have flushed out some good options, as usual. thanks, group.

Meryem,

Their goal is now to send the reconformed timeline to Apple Color or DaVinci, working with available solutions to serve as a hub.

Will Storm benefit from having the Rocket card, if not transcoding?
Hesitating to buy the card if I will be able to work smoothly direct with the Red files in Storm. Is it realistic to stay in Storm for a longer project or will it still be necessary to transcode to FCP? Transcoding times without Rocket is driving me nuts. But I'm on a budget.

Supposed to be designed to take advantage of both playing back in realtime and transcoding. Also, so far STORM will be one of the rare one to be able to take advantage of outputing video from the RR video out as a third party software (evidently DaVinci Resolve could be another one).

this looks freaking awesome. I hope they turn it into a full editing platform. nice simple interface , intuitive and powerful
