  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Panasonic's ALEXA killer?

Hardly an Alexa killer... Looks more like direct competition for Sony's NEX VG-10.

this camera might give good pictures..but it's aesthetic design is rather unfortunate.

It could be a Panasonic killer. :001_tongue:

I hope these guys at least offered to take Jim out for a nice steak dinner or something.... to thank him for pushing their company in the right direction.

Despite any obvious shortcomings, the unit looks practical and affordable.

Tom, I respect your work so much, and I know your post is half tounge in cheek.... but why?

Panasonic are a 4/3" partner and this release has zero to do with RED. Absolutely ZERO.

It is just a logical step on from their HVX range, a range that pushed indie film making every bit as much a RED has.

I'm really excited about RED, but please... just give some respect to other companies that also have the ability to push the envelope. Panasonic were building products based on customer feedback long before RED came about... it is not a new phenomena.

Yeah I'm completely turned off by the label of _____-killer as 9 times out of 10 the thing doing the supposed killing is what ultimately fails. That said, this camera is obviously not aimed at Alexa nor RED- at least not the RED One or EPIC. Falls squarely into the current DSLR video market and those folks who may be getting impatient for Scarlet to release.

Panasonic (much more than say Sony) knows how to make a camera that appeals to the prosumer filmmaker type. Witness the DVX100- first 24p DV camera and HVX200- first 24p/DVCPROHD Prosumer camcorder, etc. Frankly the AF100 is the most exciting new camera to come out in its price range for 2010, IMHO. I'd expect they'll sell a boatload (or two) of them..,

Yeah, it's not complicated why both Red MX and Alexa are far better:

1 - Much better dynamic range on both cameras
2 - Much better low light response
3 - Much nicer highlight roll-off
4 - Vastly superior codec (raw)
5 - Slightly larger sensor
6 - For Red: 4K (5K Epic)
7 - Panny has some aliasing - it will not look as smooth

More a DSLR killer than anything else, and some competition for Scarlet.

What a lot of people don't get is that if your set is above 6K a day in other expenses (crew, lights, locations, actors, etc.) you are, unless you are a total idiot, not going to go with an even slightly compromised camera to save a few hundred bucks in camera rental. You will go with whatever is best. Its' only no-budget prods that would even consider using something "good enough". Besides, the MX saves you way more money than it costs.

Math, yes, but also a real difference you can see. You can simply get clearly visible better color handling from MX and Alexa. Period.

Something some people tend to forget is that the low end is not a good place to be: more work, less status, less pay, inferior tools and working conditions. That low end type of client might not care about the difference, but I don't want that client anyway.

These companies like Panasonic and Sony sat on their technology and thumbed out scraps to the public for years. Sony could have made a S35mm 4K 60fps video camera 5 years ago. Or at least S35mm/60fps. But they did not want to undercut their $250K 1080p cameras. If Jim had not come along to shake things up and push them in the right direction, none of these companies would be doing what they are doing now. Canon 4K camera? Sony APS-C video camera with interchangeable lenses? Panasonic S35mm? Forget about it. They would still be trying to push 1/4" and 1/3" and 2/3" cameras on us.

Don't underestimate what Jim has done, the true effects of which are only now coming to fruition.

Well said Tom. Since Akio Morita died, Sony has languished with interdepartmental bullying rather than seeing the big picture like Jim did.
Sony and Panasonic are venerable companies but as you said we really need to thank Red.

Utter rubbish i'm afraid. Panasonic launched a 4/3" still camera for around $1500...with manual control, EVF, swivle screen, 24/25/30p and 60p at a time everyone else was selling 30p auto DSLRs.... Panasonic are trailblazers and seem to love indie film makers.... people screamed for the same sensor in a pro body... they did it. RED just doesn't come into the equation. Simple as that. I can only assume you do not use Panasonic or follow their amazing relations with the end user.

Their interaction with customers is more subtle than RED... but it is very much an open dialog still.

The other companies... you are right. I have said before... high end camera companies have absolutely had to change their complete business thanks to RED.

This thread was discussing Panasonic though and they should be shown respect for always listening to indies.
