What started at COMICON, the discovery of lost Star Wars footage from the 1970's, was actually a clever hoax perpetrated by director Matt Haley of Portland, OR and garnered nearly half a million hits the past couple weeks on YOUTUBE and legions of positive comments and kudos

Well the cat is out of the bag, and its time to give credit to those who made this happen... starting by clarifying it was actually SHOT ON RED "Original M Sensor" back in December of 2009. We could not have pulled this off without the RED camera allowing us so much latitude in post to degrade the glorious 4K footage on our Quantel Pablo, which was masterfully done by operator Darren Griffiths.

The space craft were all modeled by Gabe Koerner (Speed Racer) and then composited via the Quantel Pablo, where Darren also added a myriad of explosions and laser effects with Quantel's many toolsets.

The goal was to replicate 1970's 16mm film stocks by utilizing a tobacco grade, and then over saturating specific flash frames (as LUCAS did in the original) to enhance the laser fights. Garbage mattes were also added to the ships to emulate old school optical compositing... and then dust, scratches, and hair were added to fiurther "age" the footage and finally 16mm sprocket jumping and camera shake was added to further destablize the gorgeous RED footage.

Reduser participants included:
DoP Ryan Walters who wisely chose old school coral filters that were commonly used in the 1970's and provided some killer lens flares off the Stormtroopers Helmets.

Producer Tim Whitcomb (yours truly) provided the soundstage at Indent (which was still under construction as you can see here:

Indent Studios also provided RED #103 as B camera and provided edit suites and donated time on the Quantel system.

Shawn Nelson provided RED ONE #27 as A Camera.

Finally want to give a big THANK YOU TO EVERYONE WHO HELPED MAKE THIS HAPPEN! with this HD Version below that credits all the brave men and women who risked their lives for the Rebel Alliance!

Since I've already commented on the seventies look, I'll comment on the space bits: fantastic! in the SD version, I thought you guys just used some old SW material, but in the HD version, you really see the quality of those ships, and they outdo the original star wars movies (which in turn, of course, out do the "new trilogy" movies)

The 3D work was really brilliant. Also, didnt you say you had a 10k budget, without paying the artists/crew? (on the youtube HD trailer page it says only 4k)

Great work Tim. Nice to see the Pablo you got at REDucation #003 has come in useful! :-)

Everybody loves a blacksploitation spin-off.

I heard that Snoop Dogg played Chewbacca.

$4K was the shooting budget. Had to pay the Pablo artist, they dont work for free...plus airfare/hotel... everyone else worked for free.

We think it was a wise investment in our spec reel. :)

Cat was already out of the bag a week or two back about it being shot on RED. Even some BTS stuff posted here on reduser. Anyway, I can't wait to see it! Looks like it was fun as hell to make.

yeah Jeff, we just wanted to get the "credited HD version" out because people were excited and the director forgot to tell people it was being created... :)

Sweetness- was just watching this last night again. Rocks that it's shot on RED but really just conceptually and in every other way it entertains 10 times harder than anything in the 6+ hours worth of official prequels we were recently subjected to.

Yep, like Kenneth, I wanna know the ETA and where I can see it! :)

Space Aint Black Enough!

Jeff, I think this is just a trailer, nothing more, sadly.
