  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Sony Camera

Cool, would be nice if some people from REDUSER could attend and report back.

Will this event feature the same prototype camera announced/shown at NAB 2010?

From the look of that poster it looks like it could be a new F35 maybe even another 23.
New sensor, maybe 4k with would be a realistic expectation since the HDCAM format was recently updated to include 4k.
My wild prediction would be a vistavision sized sensor, stripped pattern as Sony seems to favor stripped over bayer pattern.

The "4K upgrade" was ability to record 4K DPX files in non-real time was it not?

Is the camera going to be an upgraded SRW-9000 or a completely new CineAlta?

The 9000 is a camcorder model for people who require a small crew, documentaries, perhaps more for nature photographers because they are offering a 35 mm version as well.

This will probably be an upgrade on the more cinema oriented line where you have the removable SRW1 unit or a Flash alternative.

I may be way off base but the way the ASC was talking is that this is Sony's answer to the Alexa and the Epic.

We will know soon enough.

I will go to the demo. But I feel we will know more before.

Is Curtis Clark, ASC still a paid consultant for Sony?

I know nothing about this camera, but I can honestly say I hope for some very exciting news.

It really looks as though Sony is trying to deliver a top notch Alexa/Epic competitor- an inheritor to the F35 camera. That can only be good news for ARRI, RED and most importantly for us- the film makers.

That said, I want to remind everyone that Sony is also supposed to be building some sort of cinema optimized super DSLR. If I read my Sony tea leaves properly that camera will be priced between a DSLR and a low end ENG camcorder (like the PMW F350, so between $2000 and $20000 USD) That's a huge range, but its also a different sort of camera made for a different market. Or perhaps I should say markets.

That's it, just a note that this could be something different than we (and I include myself) all expect.

Any more than that would be wild conjecture, and probably wishful thinking.

let me get this right...

Sony last year announced that their SRW9000 will eventually be buyable with a 35mm sensor (and retro fit-able)..... Sony now want to unveil a 35mm camera...?

maybe it is actually the SRW9000?

After all it is the same shape in the picture? Or is that too simple a story for Reduser?

Well Sony had a press conference... and now I can say its all three.

Three?

Yep.

Sony announced an F35 "version 2" as well as the SRW9000 with its 35mm sensor block option. They are expected to ship in quantity within the month.

They also announced the camera pictured above, which they stated was in the R&D stage, but that they expected to deliver in early 2011. They indicated that they were going to be aggressive with pricing, admitted they weren't first and talked about the "democratization" of shallow depth of field photography.

They also did something in my opinion deeply "un-Sony" : They asked for opinions on the new kit.

I suspect that this all adds up to Canon 7Ds taking a huge chunk out of their camcorder lineup and RED Ones taking F23, F35 and SRW9000 business.

Exciting times, and everyone who is intrigued by that last news item can thank RED and Canon for creating the climate where Sony might choose to make such a camera.

It will be interesting to see Sony's version of "democratization". So far NEX series is more of a tease and just for fun. Regarding concept cam, one could live with the step back in camera design, but size of that monitor is a joke. The fact that today's smart phones have larger screens than professional devices shooting 1080p is ridiculous.

East Coast

The east coast version of this SONY event is on September 21st at the New Yorker Hotel.

I'm already signed up - if there are any questions left unanswered after the west coast unveiling, perhaps there will be a chance to backfill the information gaps.

Side note: the guest speakers are Curtis Clark ASC and Francis Kelly ASC.

So...... they actually aren't debuting anything new? The SRW9000PL isn't new, that's great that they are shipping this month though. The new board/firmware they are installing into the F35 to get 12bit out the HDSDI isn't all that new of news or that interesting. Mostly because nobody can record 12bit except one Stwo OB-1 that's in their lab. They are going to start supporting 12bit in their recorders because of the F35's new board but who knows when that'll happen.

They just re-rated the camera to 800asa because everyone else is doing that. I've seen the footage and it does look great at 800asa but they haven't done anything to improve the camera at all to achieve that. So it's still the same old F35 from 2years ago just with the sony folk saying you can now shoot 800, you've always been able to do that and it would have looked the same 2yrs ago as it does today.

The new prosumer camera is cool, it give Scarlet a competitor. Let's not turn that statement into a list of why Scarlet is soo much cooler because it has so many more features, neither camera is released so let's not go there.

I have to say this is rather disappointing. When someone makes a statement the "Next Generation of 35mm Digital Motion Picture Camera" I would expect a brand new camera never seen before is coming to market. Not a camera that has the same optical block as one that was released 2yrs ago and has all the same features/capabilities just in a different form factor as a 2yr old camera.

2 out of the 3 are CURRENT generation cameras, not NEXT generation.

Very disappointing Sony, very.
