Hello everyone!

Is there any information about the crop factor at the Scarlet Interchangable,
related to its sensore size?

Since the sensor is smaller than the one of the 7D for example, should I expect a crop factor larger than 1.6?
I think it must be 4 @ 2/3".

Bests,
Tom

I think you got it, but since I see a lot of confusion online about DOF...

DOF is created by the physics of light & how light reacts in glass. Physics doesn't care about the camera you're using.

The shallower the DOF comes from the longer lens & wider then iris.

You'll get the same DOF with a 50mm lens at f/2 on a S35 camera or a 2/3" Scarlet. The FOV will be drastically different, but the DOF will be the same.

In order to get the same FOV and DOF on a 2/3" camera as you'd get on a S35 camera, you'd need a impossibly fast lens on the 2/3" camera, or you'll need to stop down on the S35.

So yes, to get the same DOF & FOV on a smaller imager camera, you'll need REALLY fast lenses.

The difference between S35/APS-C and 2/3" format for similar DOF is about 2-1/2 stops for the same AOV. Compared to the typical small chip 1/3" or less video camcorder in Scarlet's price range, 2/3" has a very useful and flexible range of creative DOF control. For general purpose production use I personally prefer 2/3" format. It has very similar characteristics to 16mm/s16mm film as far as DOF. There are good reasons why it has been the format of choice for most broadcast production for 50 years.

I am very excited and hope Scarlet will be released this year.
I am ready for placing an order.

But: I had a hard discussion with a guy who likes his 5D for video and said to me,
that Scarlet's sensor size is so small (compared to 5D), that the screen resolution
cannot be beaten by Scarlet.

"How they want to catch all those details with such a small sensor?!!", he said.

You'll have to pardon the irony in using this expression but I can't help myself - Your friend is truly not seeing "the big picture." His statement reflects nothing but ignorance of both cameras.

Where to begin... the 5D sensor, as physically large as it is, is capturing many fewer pixels than Scarlet. (No - it isn't capturing 21 megapixels when it shoots video). And it is losing much of the image resolution before it even gets captured (via line skipping) and then again after, through more processing to compress it to h.264. "Screen resolution" for the 5D is not even 2K. For Scarlet it is 3K.

There are many, many other considerations related to comparative picture quality but since you were commenting on resolution only, we can leave it at that. If you are going to base your purchase decisions on your friends' opinions, I'd suggest getting better informed friends! :001_smile:

But... 5D sensor is 15 times the size!!!!!!

Hi Terry,

Thanks for your advise. But I expect that Scarlet will be a killer, so 5D is not an option to me.
I've been waiting since 1.5 years for Scarlet and I hope a boy's dream come true this year :001_smile:
