  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

why is red selling the same ZOOM for more then twice the amount?

http://www.reduser.net/forum/showth...tical_DO50_150F_DO50_150F_50_150mm_T3_PL.html

I m just curious, why is red is selling the same Zooms for more then twice the amount?

or is the RED ZOOM different in some way? :hat:

reds NEW Zoom is a 17-50 mm with proper mechanics.
the b&h one is very similar to reds OLD 18-50 mm Zoom , which had, lets say not so perfect mechanics.

red calls his new line of Zooms...pro
they designed a new one using customer feedback, which is good.

edit: you are talking about the 50-150mm, on this i dont know why :)

Cüneyt, of course i m talking about the old Zooms 18-50 and 50-150

and the 50-150 is still in the red online store for 8,500$ you could call that a rip off right? :ihih:

Well as long as Red deliver properly on the quality control it could easily justify the difference. My first 50-150mm was not working properly, Red fixed it on the warranty, works fine 2 years on.

Knowing what I now know about those lenses, the likelyhood of getting a lemon are fairly high, QC and costumer service becomes cruicial.

I had to send in both my lenses, but both that I have now are working perfectly, and have proved themselves excellent value ( bought from Red)

considering the extraordinary value of the camera, making a profit on the lens
to me is a non issue. Plus the 50-150 is a great lens for the money even at the price red charges

You have got to be kidding me. RED re-wrote the book on lens pricing when they built the RED lenses. So accusing them of ripping off anyone with their price structure is ignorant and stupid.

Ignorant of how RED has revolutionized this niche and stupid for displaying it.

We have no idea what kind of competitive cross-currents have ensued as a result of the re-pricing of cinema lenses, thanks to RED, but I imagine deflationary lens pricing is one of them.

Perhaps a result of B&H's superior ability to purchase in volume or to manage their inventory versus RED, which is a small company with many balls in the air and much less experience with inventory control then B&H, who has had many years to perfect these processes.

Those would be my guesses.

a problem?

a problem?

Jeez , just buy from B&H, you should be glad you're saving money.
just over a year ago the likes of you were crying that there were not enough of the Red 50-150s around and nobody questioned the price.
Ohhh: the virtues of selective memory.....

Could be a problem then as B&H says

To make twice the profit?

At twice the price it would probably be 3 or 4 times the (gross) profit - not twice - which is pretty much normal manufacturing markup. Presumably, red had an exclusive for x amount of time which ran out and the oem is making direct deals.

There is a cost to having a US based English speaking supplier that is wired into the industry (AND probably funded the development and startup cost through a large order and deposit) over just dealing with a Chinese supplier.

I would also suspect that those red lenses will be sold out soon and not reordered unless at a price that keeps red competitive. But as a business grows and gets older there will be times when cycles and timing cause things to get out of whack.

Go easy...there are things and times to be critical - this probably isn't one of them.

lens optimization

lens optimization

Jacek..curious what you do to optimize them..? Do you take them apart and rearrange the glass.
I tighten up the hardware and fit, smoothen the controls, balance image if possible, etc. Glass spacing is a part of the optical design and can not be changed.

Old news. You find a better deal, buy it.
