MX @ ISO 6400 - Workflow explained.

Now I decided to open the new tread about getting maximum ISO out of MX sensor.

Here we go again and the explanation below is more visual with some additional images that you can get all the workflow fast and easy:

I mostly used to rate R1-MX @ ISO 800 that has always pretty clean image.

Second to that is ISO 1600 and use when I need it.

Extreme solution starts @ ISO 4000 that has still very good image.

Maximim ISO @ 6400 is also very usable and I recommend this combo plug in workflow for getting

a clean image out of really critical from the noise defected low and available light shots.

All you can see very good at the footage that has a link below.

Keep in mind that CC or color grading is not done on those shots,

that means if higher ISO make shifting colors you should start to fix it immediately in RCX and later on grading suite of your choice.

Also all file were processed at 8bit ProRes 422 and h264 for the Internet presentation purpose.

That means you can go with R3D RAW files much higher quality when you need it for your broadcast or even print to film file finishing workflows.

It's easy to set up and see the result.

Only rendering time is pretty long for both noise reduction plug ins.

But at the end it helps a lot to fix some of your low and available light shots.

This test example also shows how deep MX sensor can see in a dark that is even beyond human eye performance.

At the end must say that you as a RED User should try out this combo noise reduction option

and of course you can find your own way how you would make set up to work the best.

Hope you like it.

If EPIC gets Graeme's denoising in-camera it will make ENG producers chuckle violently as they fumble for their credit cards.

I bet their faces look plasticy at 6400 once they get closer. But very impressive either way. Thanks for posting Sanjin.

Roberto,

Probably you are right that EPIC will get Graeme's denoising in-camera plus HDRx and that combo should finally put a nail in film acquisition.

Could be good for any future Star Trek sequel or kind of plastic surgery commercial video spot

Thank you Sanjin,

But it hurts a little bit my mind to use double Noise Reduction as the same time. Wouldn't be better to optimize with one and another instead of both ?

Olivier,

if you want to "kill" the last traces of noise than both plug ins together would work the best.

But if you want to tolerate some of the noise you could also "transfer" that later to any of film stock grain effects digitally

than maybe one of those plug ins is enough.

Roberto,

here below is a very good example about what you are getting and losing with this de-noise plug in combo.

Actually you are getting a lot and also not losing so much.

All it depends on quality of your shot and this test shot below is far from perfect but is good for the test purpose.

Above is example of pushed ISO @ 6400 and noise you can get (image scaled from 4.5K tiff file from snap shot output in RCX.

below is de-noised image with Neat Video and Furnace Core and sharpen 21% in Sharpen FCP plug in.

I would say in one word about that result: AMAZING!

And all thanks to MX sensor great performance.

This test it is amazing, but what is more amazing is that we need to take in consideration that this is a night street shoot, imagine what you can do if you were to use just a shot on a scene a bit better illuminated?

Ketch,

you are totally right.

How does it look in motion Sanjin. What happens to the grain with the denoise and sharpening applied.
