  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

DaVinci Resolve V7.0 Supports Rocket

Unless I'm mistaken, they've sold V7 Linux, not Mac. Impressive beginning nevertheless...

You're probably right. BMD do have a post house in Singapore where they, no doubt, have a beta running right now. Don't know whether the Asian sales are a coincidence or not...

Non-expert appraisal of Resolve v7.0

Non-expert appraisal of Resolve v7.0

Just got back from a quick look at Resolve v7.0. The software was a beta Grant Petty described as "being a week or so old" (quite a long time at this stage of things) and looked very impressive and mature. Grant said the Red Rocket support was about the latest thing they've added and that they're going through bug chasing now. There were two crashes on R3Ds so obviously their not there yet but Grant said that he thought maybe a few weeks before it's ready. It's really close guys!

I'm not a colorist so don't look to me for expert appraisal but I can tell you it works, was playing R3D at 1080 "premium" at 24fps with a few nodes up, including windows, primaries, secondaries and tracking. The tracking implementation looks particularly impressive, as does the general speed and responsiveness of the app. Warren Eagles, who was giving the demo, was working pretty fast and not giving the app any breathing space and, aside from those two crashes, it was rock solid and really zippy.

You can work in A mode as well as C mode, set (and reset) your output specs and LUTs easily. If you change your monitoring or output format, say from 180p to 2k, all your windows and mattes work and don't need to be adjusted. You can work in RT with any manner of formats on the timeline at once. Avi DnX support will apparently cost a little extra because Avid demand license fees:-( but everything else is just included. Grant mentioned a couple of things that were on the to-do list that had been suggested by users and they don't seem likely to rest on their laurels.

I was particularly impressed with the level of thought they've put into allowing the operator to work in their own way and at whatever speed they want to. For instance, if it can't play 24fps, you can choose to either accept 22 or 19fps or drop the rez to give you your speed or set it to background render. Background renders work around you, so they wait while you're working and then resume when you stop. It has auto save and Warren saves a lot but not once was there any sign of the app doing anything but responding to what he was inputting - non of this spinning beachball nonsenes while it saves.

They also had it working on a laptop at SD rez and, again, nothing is disabled and everything just seems to work.

From my perspective, for those of us who have been thinking that, at this price, it's a no brainer - you're right. It makes Color look like Corel Draw circa 1980. And the way they've structured the upgrade path is really smart - you can work your way up to a well priced 4k stereo kit in small steps and without having to learn new software. Can't wait for the delivery.

I know 2008 Mac Pros aren't recommended, but as long as it works I'm sold.

You'll need the GT120 GPU. The default 8800GT requires external power. The GTX285 requires two power cords, while the 8800GT requires one - you cannot have three at a time.. I don't know about the Quadro though as I haven't seen it.

Shane, thanks for the first hand review...sounds very promising!

I'm not recommending this but PC guys (myself included) use power cable Y splitters all the time to power two units from one source.

I'm guessing that's a regular 4-pin molex cable. Right? I don't know if it's possible to find a Y splitter for PCI-e power cables... It's connected with a mini 6-pin to the motherboard.

Chris, what cables are that? Would be interesting to know!

Thanks. I'm thinking about the Quadro 4000 for the GPU heavy lifting. Should have plenty of power available if I need with the MaxConnect kit I got. This unit has room (and enough power cables) for either 4 SATA drives or an optical drive and two SATA drives. But the GT120 should be fine. For the second GPU all I really need is something to hook up my 30" LCD for the GUI.

MaxConnect kit ($119)
nVidia GT120 ($149)
nVidia Quadro 4000 ($1,199)
Tangent Wave ($1,495)
Decklink HD Extreme 3D ($995)
Resolve ($995)

Total $4,952

I already have the Red Rocket card and internal SATA drives. There is no way I'm buying a new Mac Pro and all of the above. So I'm hoping this configuration will work nicely....

Last, but not least, I'm hoping the 10-bit HDMI monitor output on the Decklink will play nice with my Dreamcolor.

on a Mac Pro, how would you fill up your limited PCIe lanes with all you need for a decent Resolve setup?

Slot 1-Nvidia Quadro FX4800 or FX4000
Slot 2-GT120 - connects the display port to a 1920x1200 DVI monitor
Slot 3-Red Rocket
Slot 4-Decklink HD Extreme 3D or AJA card

Skip the RAID card and just work with software RAID. You can fit up to 8 SATA drives in a Mac Pro with third-party solutions.

Yea, well works... unless you happen to have a $50k SAN/fiber channel storage network you need to interface with too.

which 3rd party solution?
what are the pros and cons?
and most important,how much? :)

dunno, if you have 50k for storage, you possibly have the money for the big guns...but you are right

It's about making a new software solution work with an existing hardware infrastructure (SAN) and having to support two graphics cards at the same time. I can't chuck my ATTO card, or my Kona 3 (unless Im forced to upgrade it to use Resolve?) so either I use the two suggested graphics cards or I use one and a Rocket, assuming the lions share of work will be grading .R3D.

But would that even be a better option than just running with the two suggested graphics cards, since I can't have 5 cards?

Yeah, that's the problem. Internal RAIDs are used but external storage options are far more versatile and will be potentially accessed by more than one system. So, we still have the PCI-e card problems with the Mac Pro. Hopefully more solutions are in the works. But still very intrigued by Resolve. Sounds like it's coming along nicely. I like that it's being described as snappy. I like software interfaces that feel very responsive with as little lag as possible. Even the slightest lags can cause significant productivity losses.
