RED ZOOMS for SALE

If your willing to come below the DigiOptic version of the 50-150 I may be interested in purchasing

Thanks Lee for that info, to be honest i had no idea about those lenses. We now have to reevaluate what we want to do with them :)

Those DigiOptic lenses have been discussed here before, but seem to be a real puzzle. The 18-50 first showed up on B&H for a very cheap price with a huge shipping charge and most of us got a good chuckle out of that one -- would have actually cost a buyer close to $15K. But that was quickly changed.

Based on some comments from Jarred, it seems RED is aware of where these lenses come from and what the relation is (Which makes sense). They first showed up about the time that RED announced they were discontinuing the 18-50. It's been speculated that these are the same lenses, just sold under a different label from either the company that manufactured the lenses for RED or perhaps someone who is continuing to sell the lenses from that manufacturer now that RED is no longer doing so.

They could also be re-manufactured or re-labeled B-stock lenses that failed initial QC testing for RED's purposes. Personally, even with the cheap price, I wouldn't buy one until I know more about where they come from or why they exist. No one seems to know...

Guys, I'm certainly not trying to thread crap here, however I think that it's important that we help each other be aware of what we're buying and what's available. If helping other REDUSER's out in that regard is is politically incorrect I apologize. I think that we would be doing ourselves a disservice not mentioning these types of details that some may not be aware of. I hope that my post is taken in the manner it's intended, which is to help someone make an educated decision and to help provide accurate information.

I very very much agree with this, even the lenses sold from RED had some QC issues, I know I had to send in both mine. But if you get a good one, they are really handy, lightweight and a great value.

The RED label may mean they have passed a more serious QC, I would recommend having the lens(es) tested, ask to see tests. How well does the gear turn, does turning the zoom also move the iris or focus (happened on mine), and how well will it hold focus through it´s zoom range.

If you get a good set, they are worth a good price imho!

If what B&H sells you is anything like the first set I got from RED, I wouldn´t want it even if the price was 1000$, BUT if I could get a set like the one I have now (after RED got me new ones), I think the asking price in this thread is justified - provided you make sure there are no issues.

Hi Eirik,

Bearing in mind you had to send your 2 back & the ones I saw were a little rough, I don't think there was much 'serious QC' to worry about losing.

Best Stephen

Hi Stephen, you're probably on to something, my main point is that apparently these lenses comes from the factory with a rather high failure rate, that is something to concider before commiting yourself to a time costly RMA exchange with B&H.
