I'm pleased to post that another feature shot on Red, which I was involved with, is premiering at the Toronto International Film Festival (TIFF), on 11 Sept 2010. The film is "Little Sister"--written, produced and directed by A.S.C. cinematographer and my friend Richard Bowen. Little Sister is “the first telling of the original Cinderella story from ancient China”.

Here's a production still, from the TIFF web site:

The film was shot on beautiful remote locations all over China. The DP was the talented top Chinese cinematographer Wang Yu, who shot Lost in Beijing and Ye Lou's Suzhou River, and Purple Butterfly (with Zhang Ziyi).

“Little Sister” was shot on 2 Reds (Build 17, 4K 16:9, 23.98fps)–mine and Justin Chin’s (of Infinite Machine)–on Panavision Primo lenses, primarily in remote locations of Yunnan, but also in other spectacular areas of China, in Feb – May 2009. Coloring and finishing was done by world renowned colorist Bob Festa.

Here's a couple photos I took of the shoot. The first shows us shooting a scene next to the mighty Yangtze River, roaring with snow melt from Tibet. The second shows our two Reds (with Panavision Primo lenses) resting next to two donkey turds, on a Chinese farm house porch.

Check out my blog post for a slideshow of more "behind the scene" photos. Sorry, I can't show photos of actors or the amazing costumes and village/temple locations.

And sorry, no trailer yet. But trust me, this is going to be a visually beautiful and stunning film : )

More details on the movie from the TIFF web site:

Filled with beautiful cinematography and a wardrobe that befits a fairy tale, Little Sister is a gorgeous film based on one of the earliest versions of the beloved story Cinderella. In this enchanting version drawn from ancient scripts – which filmmaker Richard Bowen discovered in a Beijing museum – we are transported to a time and place where boys are valued over girls….

Featuring an excellent Chinese cast, including newcomer Xiao Min as Mei Mei, and wonderful narration by Asian American actress Brenda Song, accomplished cinematographer Richard Bowen’s directorial debut is a striking film filled with wonder and magic that reveals the Chinese origins of this famous fairy tale. Inspired by the two Chinese daughters he and his wife adopted, Bowen has skillfully created a family-friendly film that celebrates an important moral – that girls are as good as boys.

Please check out the movie (esp. if you're at TIFF!) when you have a chance! I'll keep folks posted on theatrical and DVD/Blu-ray release here on reduser, on my blog, on my company web site, and on our Facebook page.

cheers!
Dan

Enjoy!

Excellent Dan. Looking forward to seeing the film. Who scored the music? :-) Would've loved to compose he music for this film. ;-)

Hi Everyone,
Coming in late to the thread. I was away in Indonesia and India. As Dan mentioned my camera was the B Cam and in addition I worked on the crew as the 2nd Unit VFX Cinematographer. Quite fun working with those Primo lenses on the Red Cam.

I've posted some more BTS photos on my flickr account if you're interested. I have plenty of photos of the great costumes in the film but I haven't posted those yet because they might be used by the production (plus at the time of posting they were confidential).
