I am in the midst of getting a set of lens for my RED camera, mostly shooting TV commercial, MTVs and Documentary. I am prepare to pay around $25k, either a zoom or a set of prime, hope to hear from the gurus in this forum for any open suggestions/recommendation...

Here are my list:

Zeiss LWZ.2 15.5-42/T2.6
Angenieux Optimo DP 16-42/T2.8
Angenieux Optimo DP 30-80/T2.8

Zeiss Compact Primes CP.2 (set of 5) - 18/25/35/50/85
UniQoptics Kenji Signature Series (set of 6) - 18/25/35/50/85/100
RED Pro Prime (set of 5) - 25/35/50/85/100

I like the Optimo DP zooms, but they're around 20K each, so out of your budget, as you need both (unless you never go longer than 42mm, or wider than 30mm)

The Red Pro Primes are excellent, add the 18mm to the set, $22.800 total. If you feel like you need a zoom, add the Red 17-50mm, $6K.

If you have the budget get the angenieux rougues(16-42 &30-80mm)-the light weight seems to really fit your style of work. Primes are for feature work with full crew and time to setup.
The angenieux zooms last forever, are welcome on any set with open arms-they have stellar reputation in the community. They retain the resale value the best if you ever want to sell them..
my 2 cents...
FYI I don't sell them or get anything of it- just sharing my 25 year perspective...

I think I will go with the Angenieux Optimo DP zoom lenses, 16-42 & 30-80. Thank you for all your suggestions...

Probably not much different from a new one if you talk the talk to Angenieux. Try Christopher or even Jean-Marc. The point is to have work for it. If you don't it's just an expensive accessory overloading your finances. It needs to generate positive cash flow as soon as you get it. But you already know that- you are an entrepreneur.
One thing I found out about rental houses - they won't spend a penny until their customers "twist their arm" into buying something. Learn from it...

I was talking to an Angenieux vendor just today. I own Angenieux and want a broader scope of coverage. At NAB this last March, it was announced that Angenieux was now going to provide Cooks' i interface. At Cinegear in June, Angenieux staff told me that they were coming out with new products soon. Has anyone heard anything?

Staying with the Angenieux theme here, some of their cinema series only service acadamy format. However, with their extenders, you get can get S35+, but the cost is going down to a 3-3.5T stop. How costly is that t stop loss to most DP's?

I'm pretty sure that all Angie zooms cover Redone just fine. I'm not 100% sure about the HR but optimos and compact zooms all cover big TV- 30+ mm diagonal
pretty close to Epic's recorded area..

Jacek said it right. Primes are ideal for "crew" like environments.

Zooms are great, particularly when you come from a video lens
background.

Prime values: (1) Red, (2) Unique Optics
Zoom values: (1) Red 17-50, (2) Ruby 14-24
