Does anyone know the current approximate Market Value of a Used, Executed, Out-of-Warranty, High Serial #, Non-MX'd RED ONE?

$15-17k for a used, executed out of warranty Red One
$21-24k for a used, executed out of warranty MX Red One

$15-17k for a used, executed out of warranty Red One

How do you figure if a brand new camera body is/was $17,5K when demand peaked? I'd suspect somewhat lower than that...

Noah

Absolutely, Noah. . . I think Rick's a bit off here. Why would I buy an executed, used RED with no warranty for $17K when I can buy a new one, UNexecuted, with warranty for $18K (including the CF reader/writer)?

I would bet an executed RED would be worth, at most, $12K without MX, maybe $18 with the MX. But, I could be completely wrong here.

Stephen

Sorry, you guys are wrong. This is what the value is today. I've been looking. Maybe a little less on the non-MX but as of right now Red is still not shipping MX Red Ones brand new so there still is a priority on them. I just had a friend sell his executed Red One Non-MX for $17,000 but he also sold accessories on top of that too, not included in that 17k price tag

I've been offered a high serial R1-m for around $9k! (as part of a bundle) ... this was around the deadline of stage 2, so that may have affected the price.

The only reason I see a non MX R1 going for anything above $12k is if it is eligible now for MX upgrade and the buyer needs to shoot MX now.

Trade in Value is still 17,500. If RED will give you that why should you take less?

If you can't afford the rest of the funds to trade up to the next camera or if you went for Stage 2.

Small point, but a brand new R1 costs 18k (as the CF module is mandatory) plus shipping.

There was a brief window of 30 days where people had to decide whether they should go for Stage 2 or 3. For those people who had planned on going Stage 3 found themselves with the option of pre-selling their R1 at 9k with no financial loss, but an earlier place in the Epic-X line. That window has closed, and prices are back to a more normal level.

Keep also in mind that used R1s are usually sold as a package, with a harddrive and a EVF/LCD. Since the latter ones are currently on back-order, this is the only way to get a workable system from scratch, something that of course has an affect on the price.

Once the Stage 2 Epics start shipping, I imagine that there'll be some lower price offers, after which the market will normalize.

There are still some amazing deals around... it really all comes down to how many people out there need an R1 right now compared to how many people want to sell now (supply and demand).

Anyone who is not desperate to shoot right now will sit on their money and wait to buy Epic/Scarlet or for the flood of cheap R1s that will hit when stage 2 starts.

I was in the market for an R1 for some time and got some amazing offers (even post stage 2 payment) but the bait of Scarlet s35 keeps drawing me back, as I don't need to shoot until next year.

You also have to factor in demand, the fact that the Red One has no moving parts, is built like a tank, and there is no wear associated with it. It theoretically does not degrade over time. So MX'ing aside, apart from the jockeying of serial number benefits and the warranty, there is no downside to buying one used. For as long as the camera is functional, it should provide the same level of performance as one that is fresh off the assembly line.

a bit off topic, but I hope that I am misreading this, but I though only stage 2 has come to pass. Did I miss an email?

Eythan, I interpreted Martin's comment as "if I don't go Stage 2 with my R1, by default, that puts me into the Stage 3 option" -- ie. more of a defacto choice if an owner didn't chose S2.

Stage 3 "mechanics/logisitics/deposits" are not in play yet.

Any item is only worth what a buyer is prepared to pay. I've bought kit in the past and paid over market value, to me it was worth every penny because i needed it. In contrast i have also paid under market value, when i didn't really need to purchase but couldn't pass a bargain by. If i was to sell my RED's, both MX'd i wouldn't let them go for less than they cost me. So that keeps my market strong, they have paid for themselves many times over, so they hold their value for me. IT makes sense for all of us to keep the market strong, pay good money, make good money.:yesnod:

Many are just over exaggerating about the price. Nobody's is buying new cameras, thats sure. Executed non MX cameras are plenty. Even MX upgraded are for sale. Once the EPIC released all old RED prices will crash either MXd or not.

I disagree. Crash is what happened to S16 kit, SR3 kits are now selling for a fraction of what they where selling for a few years ago, that's what i call crash. RED's won't crash, because they are still a viable money making tool. I will certainly hang onto at least one of my RED's when i get my Epic. Red One is still a fantastic camera, they will still be producing great images. Still in demand and therefore still retain their value.

Sorry for causing a brief panic, but Jack is right. I take it as granted that anyone not going for stage 2 will take stage 3 - it just is an offer too good to refuse.

I beg to differ. A complete Epic-X package will set the buyer back at least 35k. If you are doing studio work and don't need 5k or the high frame rates, a nicely used R1 with the *same sensor* as the Epic-X will give you very similar pictures, while setting you back only about half as much.

As I said earlier, once the Epic-X starts shipping, I believe there'll be a brief period where cash-strapped R1 owners have to sell their cameras quick to have the necessary funds for the Epic - no one knows how many there are, but my bet is that most owners that have opted for stage 2 have either already sold (well, leased) their R1s or have strong plans on keeping their beloved R1 - after all, it is the perfect back-up/B-camera on an Epic shoot. The start of stage 3 will further diminish the number of available R1s in the field.
