  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

!!! UPDATE: I have replaced the ZIP files with actual R3D files due to artifacts created by the ZIP compression... !!!

Over the last three days we were shooting a small project in the scorching heat & humidity of summer Tokyo, but I haven't had this much fun in a long time. Why? This was my first date with the M-X and... ...I'm speechless. I can only imagine what Epic will do with this sensor...

Anyway - I remembered that there was not much M-X R3D's floating about, especially ones with direct comparison to standard M sensor. So after our shoot was done I have packed two sets of RED ONE's (one MX and one M) and two sets of RPP's and headed out to the nearby mountains...

IMG_3068.JPG

Both cameras had identical settings with 320 ISO and 5600˚ Daylight as the base. I have not used any filters at all - just the bare RPP's. After the initial shot with the chart I have always positioned the MX (Camera A) for the shot first, exposed it perfectly and then kept the tripod in place and swap the cameras. I've then duplicated identical setting on the M camera (Camera B) with the exact same aperture on the primes. Each clip is about 10s. This should clearly demonstrate the improvements...

Many thanks to Date-san from NHK & SUAVE Images for their help...
And I couldn't have done this without the support of MUSETEX, especially Kaku Ito, with whom I have been working for several months now...
If You are ever in Japan and need to do any RED-related project (both production and post) - MUSETEX is the one to go to...

Here are the shots. Bellow each photo there is link to full-res TIFF and the original R3D's. The TIFF's are 49.2 MB. The R3D's are around 10s each and between 150~300 MB's. Enjoy...:

The above shot was on the 25mm RPP. I have then pulled out the 18MM - which was my "another" first that day. This is how the above shot looks like with the 18MM (Same camera position and settings):

I have spent rest of the afternoon shooting with the 18MM only to get more feel for it. I will post another thread for the 18MM footage only. But before I go I want to share one LCD grab to show You how amazing the Mysterium-X really is...:

IMG_3100.JPG

Normally scene like this will either clip in the highlights, or in the shadows. Notice the "perfect" RAW histogram stretching all the way from the shadows all the way to the highlights without clipping either...

And just one more BTS grab...:

As always - feel free to play with the R3D's as much as You like. You may also show them to someone interested in comparing MX & M RED ONE cameras. Just don't claim You've shot them... ;o)

If You want to post any grabs, etc, somewhere else, or show these images in a public space - please credit me and link back to REDUSER.

Hope You enjoy...!

Hi Peter,

thanks for the test footage.
FYI: A001_C006_081514.zip says it can't be found.

Do you think it would be possible to post single frames from both cameras here side by side for easier comparison? So one doesn't has the need to download all the footage just for a quick look.

Beautiful locations and photography!!!!

Stephen

Thanks Peter...

I have received a message (thanks to Philip) about some bad frames showing up in some of the R3D's - namely the clip 7 (A001_C007) frame 91. I have reviewed my original files and there was no such a error. If You encounter any such a errors - please let me know, so I can check the files on the server and re-upload if necessary...

Cheers,

Peter

These are 100% crops (pixel for pixel) after I have boosted out the ISO to 3200 - all other setting were identical:

It's unbelievable how the MX has pretty much no noise what so ever after I have boosted the correctly exposed ISO 320 all the way up to 3200...
I am afraid this is not a good news for Your business Robert... :aureola:

Impressive... the vertical line on BOTH clips @ the same spot is weird, though...

That is nothing more then actual vegetation...
The shots are actually not perfectly aligned as You can see from the R3D's, since I have to swap the cameras on the tripod in position. It is physically impossible to reposition the cameras to the exact same view and therefore cause some kind of "artifact". It is most likely some kind of spider string or something of that sort. Also if You notice it is not perfectly vertical and it ends behind the leaf - it does not continue all the way through the frame...

@ Ketch - I can only imagine what the "ladies' man" is testing on... :willy_nilly:

Hey Peter
Thanks for posting.
Here is a comparison test I did back in February...

I don't work for this website. But it'll be the best fifty cents you've spent! Compression aside - you still get a good idea of how amazing the new sensor is.

Hi Dylan, I know very well the DCL site and there is definitely a lot of great stuff on the site. Also - there has been many comparisons done before, but the main purpose here was to provide the actual R3D's from such a comparison, so people can see for themselves. Image post-processing, video compression and many other aspects can affect the result posted in the final comparison video footage. But RAW is RAW, no processing what so ever...

Cheers,

Peter

For those of You wandering what chart is in the first photo - This is the ColorChecker Passport from X-Rite (http://www.xrite.com/product_overview.aspx?ID=1257). You can get it for $99 from B&H (http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/651253-REG/X_Rite_MSCCPP.html)

I love it for it's compact size and rugged encasing. If You flip the middle section over it also has a grey-chart for white balance. I would love to see such a "pocket" version of the RED chart (RED CAMBOOK) as well. Not everyone can carry the full-sized one to the locations. Jarred...?

The new MX sensor is no doubt an amazing improvement for everyone.
But you know - with better tools people tend to push the limits even more. I have done some initial tests with MX footage and I can help my customers to push the limits far beyond ISO3200 :D
