Brent, I hate to beat a dead horse, but is there any chance you guys could possibly add a function that would allow me to browse and then DELETE R3D files within Red Cine-X?

On my PC I am currently without the ability to browse and delete my R3D files directly, due to lack of a Quicktime R3D proxy codec.

Thanks for considering it. This would be tremendously helpful to many of us on PCs.

If that's the case, THEN PLEASE RELEASE A NEW RED RUSHES!!! I am really sick of having to run three copies of RCX to max out my MacPro. I don't do enough post work (mainly shoot for others) to justify getting a Rocket card, so I just brute force footage out...but it would be nice to do it in one, simple interface!

The 261 fixes the render error in multiple terminal software only render.

It would indeed be handy, if redcinex could export into bashscripts, that could be then launched separately in terminals, as redcineX renderer utilizes only 2 cores out of 8, and those are not running even at 80%.

8 redlines however push the nehalem to 98%, which really makes a difference, if you have a couple of them.

Maybe we should stop this whole render farming and just get a RR...

Okay then... I have suggestions revolving around one idea:

Make it very easy for people to play back RED footage at high quality.

Hire 3 new coders:

1. One coder to make a "player only" mode of REDCINE-X with just color controls (no timeline, folder list, export options) - when the user double-clicks a R3D on Mac or PC, this should pop up. For extra points, make it load really quickly. For exen more, have a "load into full REDCINE-X" button.

2. One coder to get Windows and Mac to show decent thumbnails in the Finder / Explorer.

3. One (very smart) coder whose only job is to get REDCODE decoding fast and make it use the cores and GPUs properly. Please implement this in the SDK as well as REDCINE-X. With DaVinci only costing $1000, you want everyone to make their R3Ds beautiful in it. But DaVinci can't decode full quality at full speed. REDROCKET is not a solution if there aren't enough slots in a Mac Pro, the only laptop it works on is a 17" MacBook Pro and it costs nearly as much as a Scarlet.

Again, I'm not suggesting that the current, BRILLIANT team have to add this to their workload. In my mind, they would run the new coders through the system for a little while, then go on vacation for a month, then come back bursting with cool new feature ideas :) They are too inventive to be implementing mundane tasks like this. They should be doing next-generation stuff that further pushes the strengths of RED vs the other camera companies. But I bet there are a ton of smart coders who'd love the honor of doing the more boring stuff (for a good salary of course).

Last time I suggested this stuff over a year ago I got flamed to heck for being disrespectful to RED's coders. I'm not dissing the coding staff, I'm dissing whoever is saying "we can't hire more software guys to help. The current team should just work around the clock implementing mundane stuff instead of getting some sleep."

Seriously though, if RED had just hired guys then (OR opened up the file format, but I'm done suggesting that as an alternative) - these basic things could have been done by now.

+1

RED yet to come mainstream success in the lower end needs this.

In the browser, try right-clicking on a clip and selecting "Show in Folder". This will open a windows explorer/finder window with the R3D file selected -- you can then delete it from there.

Any chance of adding a feature that will allow us to trim R3D files and DELETE the garbage and only retain the essential part of the clip to reduce file sizes and save storage space? Example: camera rolling while waiting forever for wildlife to do something.

Build 261 has crashed on me several times if I try to browse media too fast. I have to really slow down and let it get loaded before I try to do anything.

A couple other things that would be nice:

Be able to see the current frame on the monitor when not playing back on SDI. Everytime I want to white balance I have to turn off SDI output to pick a point, then turn SDI back on and check it that is what I wanted, because I can't see the image to pick my white balance point. I don't need it to play on both monitors, just show me the current frame on the computer monitor when not playing.

Also, when I turn off my SDI, I can't recheck PsF when I try ti turn it back on. I have to change my output mode (10bit 422, etc) before I can check the PsF check box and get my monitor to work again.

An easier way to select a clip would be nice. Right now if I want to copy and paste a look, I have to drag each clip to the viewer one at a time and paste. It would be nice if I could select multiple clips in the browser and paste to them.

Thanks,
Dusty

Thanks for all the great suggestions. Just as a friendly reminder, before you start adding members to the RED software dev team for us, we offer our software on RED.com at no charge. :)

But, like I said, the vast majority of features we add are directly from customer feedback, so keep it coming.

Brent, I appreciate the response regarding the ability to delete R3D files from inside Red Cine-X on PCs. This would be a game-changer for me and many other PC user who are currently having difficulty browsing and deleting clips efficiently on PCs (due to lack of R3D QT proxy on PCs).

requests:

1) Color Bars
2) R3D trimming
3) Info crosshairs that you could drop on an image to color correct numerically - like Photoshop. Currently the histogram shows RGB values... so that part is done. It would just be nice to plant some crosshairs on a color and watch the RGB values of that color change as you do your CC.

Question - what do the RGB values in the histogram represent? They appear to be RGB IRE levels but it's not documented yet in the manual. In Apple Color they are IRE numbers but in RedCineX they could be 32 bit RGB values.. I believe those would be different than IRE numbers but I'm unsure.

Hi Joel,

The histogram in RCX just provides a statistical description of the current frame. Basically, all you are seeing is a pixel count plotted against each color level. It's the same in Apple Color.

Apple Color uses IRE (which is just a relative unit of measurement) for the various waveform displays you can toggle.

Hi Joel,

The histogram in RCX just provides a statistical description of the current frame.

There's an RGB numerical value box under the histogram in the histogram window. Those values change as you float your cursor over the image - so you can get an RGB value for any spot in the image. The question is what do those RGB Values stand for? RGB in sRGB/Rec709 color space or something else?

In Apple Color, in the the 3D Vectorscope display you can target values on screen and get their RGB number as IRE units. You can set several information crosshairs in the 3D Vectorscope as well.
