Two years ago, ARRI introduced the very popular MMB-1 mattebox. It became an immediate hit with our clients and the company quickly responded with various requested accessory options. Soon these options became what everyone wanted on their MMB-1, so after some discussion, ARRI decided to offer a version with these options substituted for the originals. This way, clients weren’t left with unwanted items at additional expense. Most requested were a top-loading rotating filter stage and a larger, 143mm rear clamp. This version of the mattebox is available now as the MMB-1 Top Load Mattebox. Check out the video for details.

Hi Mitch,

I happen to have one on order, but I'm wondering about the top loading, most grad 4x5'6 filters I've ever used had the separation between the clear part and ND part run across the short width, therefore they cannot be used with this version of the Mattebox, while with the side loading one, it would be possible to rotate the rear stage (that is the only one rotating right) 90 degrees and then slide it in or out to adjust the grad as you like.

Since this Mattebox only has one topload filter stage, it would have seemed more logical to me to have the front one be topload and the rear one, which is rotatable, be side load.

Cheers,
Damien

Interesting thoughts. There have been sideload matteboxes for decades, but I do see your point. I have to say that most grad filters I see and certainly the greater volume of what we rent and sell are oriented for use with a top load rather than a side load. But this is why you now have options.

I don't know anything about your particular situation. Let's talk privately to see what can be done.

Good point Damien. Arri sells a vertically oriented 4x5.65 filter tray for the MB-20 (K2.65049.0). I wonder if they'll make a similar one for this new MMB-1 or if that one would fit? (Mitch?) That would solve it and also give you more options. I think Arri is one step ahead of us here...
