  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hello, I'm very new to this software and I need to figure out a problem.
I have and EDL of a very simple project from premiere cs5. The EDL contains only video data (no audio layers). IN the EDL I have 3 clips, each one with it's own specific TC in and OUT. When I conform (it finds the right clips with no problem) and I build the construct, it displays me all the clips in all their lenght. Basically in the construct I see the clips with the duration of the file and not of the clip in the edl. The project and clips and edl are all 24fps. If I want the right duration of each clip I have to go to the editor menu and cut manually each clip, and that sucks. I think I'm doing something wrong....
EXAMPLE: In the EDL I have one clip which is:
source in IN 21:21:29:09
source Out: 21:21:33:06
record in 11:03
record out : 15:00
So in premiere this clip last for almost 4 seconds.
In the construct instead I see the whole file....any solutions? I tried with different EDLs but same result.

Can you cut and paste a few lines from the EDL? You should see four sets of numbers on each line - tc source in, tc source out, tc record in, tc record out

Seems like the source in & out are not being recognized. More than likely it's an issue with the EDL iteslf, as Scratch reads CMX3600 EDL format pretty much flawlessly. Just make sure you are using the CMX 3600 edl format.

regards,

JT

here is another edl I'm trying to use with a different timeline and same files
001 A V C 19:11:18:04 19:11:23:05 00:00:00:00 00:00:05:01
* FROM CLIP NAME: MVI_1697.avi

002 A V C 21:18:01:14 21:18:05:16 00:00:05:01 00:00:09:03
* FROM CLIP NAME: MVI_1713-001.avi

Same problem...

I'm pretty sure your material is Canon camera generated. Every Canon file starts with TC 00:00:00:00. So no, your EDL will not work, as the TC of your source TC is wrong...

Yes is from some canon 5d camera and converted to cineform...I tried with some DV clips but it's not working either. So there is no way to make it work?

thank you anyway...

Yes, there is a way to make it work, but it will require you first to transcode your h264 files to Prores. Once you do that, it will assign each file TC of time of day and you then can use Prores files with correct TC for editing and reconfirming later using EDL. It's a well known problem with Canon files, so it's really not a big deal, if you know about it before you start editing... Not sure about Cineform though...

Looking at the EDL sample given, it is the record time-code which begins at 00:00:00:00. The source time-code appears to be time of day, so I am not sure that this is the problem.

I don't have access to a Scratch here, but FCP opens the two line EDL posted with no problems, and the in/out points come across correctly.

Yeah, I checked online on the cineform forum and they say that when you convert to cineform, it creates files with timecode using the time of the day.. THe weird part is that I tried importing a DV edl with a dv clip in a dv project (all the fps were the same) An I still have the same problem. I tries to use a little software to regenrate the timecode of the h26 files and importing them directly it seems to work...but it's weird..

Ok maybe is something I do wrong. I will explain my worflow for EDL. Maybe there is some mistake:
new project with media path where the clips are, same FPS and resolution
Open construct >load layers and load all the clips (in this case all the .avi cineform files)
the clips are all in the construct and they all play and display correctly.
At this point i click on Load EDL and open up my edl, than I click on match NAME only and it finds the correct clips. I create a new construct using the edl.
In this workflow I can only click to match the name and the reel name because the TC doesn't work....

Open cineform file MVI_1697.avi and see, if you have expected TC 19:11:18:04 through 19:11:23:05 and verify visually the IN and OUT points. If the TC is there and the IN and OUT points are correct, then it should work. If TC is incorrect, then that is the problem.

I looked ath the file in premiere and the timecode is displayed correctly. I tried to convert the same files to prores instead of cineform and the same procedure works perfectly (with EDL exported from finalcut)...I think is the TC generated inside the AVI or the EDL from prememiere...

SOLVED

SOLVED

OK finally solved the problem. The files work If I convert them using cinefomr in .mov instead of AVi. The thing it's weird because doing this each new mov file (cinform) has a new timecode (each clip starts from 00:00:00). This way works great!!!!
p.s.There is any way to import XML (from final cut) ? I need to import a project with r3d.. (I exported XML and modifed with clip finder to reconnect original r3d)
