  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Big bummer!

My Quadro FX 4800 arrived a week ago, I'm not getting any performance benefits from using it on Premiere CS5 5.0.1 through the MPE. I go into project settings and select GPU acceleration and still my R3D's are playing back choppy, in full rez. I noticed in some of the videos that they were selecting an option called Cuda Acceleration rather than GPU acceleration in their project settings. Maybe this has something to do with it. Somebody Help!

Running on 8 GB's of Ram and a Raid 0.

I think R3D decoding is happening on the CPU. Check your performance monitor and see if the CPUs are pegged. Probably. Either the coding needs to get changed in the app (or RED's SDK adds GPU support) or actual hardware like RedRocket is required.

Of course that shouldn't stop anyone from editing. You only need 1/8 or maybe quality to edit by.

Not sure on a PC, but on the Mac, you have to make sure to download and install the CUDA drivers. Also make sure that "Mercury Engine" is selected in your project or sequence settings.

I have a very bad ass system, 3.4 GHZ dual quad i7 with a 500 MBS san and a 5800 Nvidia card and I can't get non choppy play back in full rez. Set Premeire to half rez and you will get smooth playback and many layers. MPE is mostly for editing and composing, not so much for FULL quality output. When using output cards like Kona you won't see the MPE either. You will only see it on your computer monitor. You have to render your amazingly complex creation in order for Kona to output it to a deck. This is something that is not talked about in the Adobe videos about CS5 and we felt dissapointed with. But really, CS5 is still a huge breakthrough because now even a raw R3D will play back in real time. At ou shop, we convert all R3D's to CineForm to maximize the speed of our system. We have a 50 inch plasma connected via SDI and DVI. MPE with DVI. First Light color correction, After Effects and Kona output through SDI.

R3D files also need to be in a natively-sized timeline for smooth playback. So far my only testing has been without an external I/O card. On a Mac with both the GeForce 120 and the FX4800 card. I was able to get smooth real-time playback in half resolution (single layer, no effects) only in a 4K timeline (with the FX4800). I get smooth playback on the 120 card at 1/4 resolution. When this is 4K media in a 1080 timeline, you have two scaling functions, which taxes performance. In these tests I did have trouble trying to go fullscreen with the timeline player window.

My CPU is pegged, it runs at 100% with or without GPU acceleration enabled in project settings, and in lower resolutions (1/4, 1/8) I can see no performance gain in CPU usage with gpu acceleration enabled, on a Quadro 4800 FX how is this possible?

Simple. CPU is decoding and not the GPU. The GPU is doing other stuff... like handling all the FX and color correction. I'm honestly not sure what a 4800FX gives you over a much less expensive card when it comes to video editing.

I'm assuming Adobe has to rely on RED's SDK for R3D decoding. Will RED ever support GPU decoding on anything other than a RedRocket? Perhaps when Scarlet shows up and a much different market needs care and feeding.

Also on DAVS techtable he uses a core 2 extreme and a quadro 4800 with gpu acceleration he does multicam with red r3ds.

In the testing I did with the GeForce 120 versus the FX4800 (same machine), I was able to get at least one resolution setting higher with the FX4800 card. Clips that played smoothly on the FX4800 at 1/2 res had to be dropped to 1/4 on the 120.
