Whats are the more favorable settings for shooting when doing live gun shots or live blanks to capture the gun fire.

thanks
Luis

Thanks Ketch
but in terms of shooting 24fps or 23.98
what shutter speed should i be at to make sure it does not cut half of the gun fire or loose the gun fire in all.

thanks.

If you use a RED raid in a RED cradle you should worry more about losing entire frames.

...not sure what does work but I know that combo does not.

(at least it didn't for me)

Be sure to test your set-up before hand, if you have the chance.

It works in any way you shoot it, no matter how you shoot it, for that matter, but the effect will change drastically depending on your settings, Shutter Speed, and FPS, aperture, were you are focused at, what BG are you shooting against, this are all things that will play a role in how the shot comes out, and not only what it is captured of the Shot, but also how it is captured, and the effect that it gives.

Under cranking, and overarching are also often used as to create yet an other effect, dramatizing even more the particular effect for the scene.

24fps vs. 23.98fps is just a matter of Audio sync, and you have to make sure that you shoot to meet the requirements.

The longer your shutter is open, the more likely it will be that you will capture the flash, but the more motion blur you will also get. "Public Enemies" for example shot the nighttime gun battle with a 360 degree shutter so the machine gun fire was always captured on each frame at maximum brightness and duration, but there also was a lot of blur as well.

Mr. Mullen that was very helpful.
Hope your doing GREAT.

Thank you
Luis

Yea Non Guns are cool and lights up the scene but they really need some post work to add some reality.... their flash is great for lighting up the actor or room but needs smoke, shells and a more realistic flash on top of theirs. And they are like $5 a shot, blank guns are a lot cheaper and airsoft cheaper still.

Side note - Shoot it against a bright blue screen / sky. I have numerous libraries of footage where you can't take advantage of the natural puff of black smoke on the tail of the shot because of a black BG. Gunshots aren't the worst offenders though, try getting some black smoke out of explosions shot at night!
