  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Hi,

We have given transcoding and syncing services to a feature film shot 24fps.

They are editing on Avid mc 2.7.

Yesterday they shot some extra scenes. The AC was not very familiar with the RED and opened a 25 fps project and using varispeed changed the fps to 24.

Any suggestions on how to transcode and input into an existing 1080/24P project. Keeping in mind that it will have to conform to R3D via EDL,

Thanks.

using Varispeed in MC or in the camera? I am a little unclear here.

So the camera's project frame base was set to 25 fps (instead of 24), but you under cranked by 1 fps to 24? The clips will look like they are 25 fps in the data, but will play back just a tad faster than native speed.

Am I correct in clarifying the issue so far?

I don't get it. What is your workflow? What application is doing the transcoding? Whas this footage SHOT at 25fps, or 24? If this was opened in a 25fps project in MC 2.7, then how (since 2.7 won't allow you to use 24fps footage in a 25fps project)?

the actual recorded fps is right, then. Good for you. No syncing issues.

Probably you could change some metadatainfo to get it right.

Or you could go through a quicktime retime in cinematools. I've managed to do this on the cam-proxies on earlier builds.

Just worth a try before going into despair....

Correct!

Gunleik, I thought about Qt and Cinematools but what would that make for the conform back to R3D's via EDL?

I think Gunleik's first suggestion about altering the metadata of the qt is probably the way to go, force it to think the file is 24fps. Would it still appear undercranked? Not sure.

Cinematools might also work. As for the re-conform to the .R3D files, are you doing that on a system that looks at them natively or are you pre-transcoding before color correction? If you pre-transcode, you just recreate the same steps on those clips, but it your going .R3D native, you are going to need to retime these clips at some point and it might require transcoding them after the cc then retiming them before the final conform. I would discuss this with the online/colorist as it will depend on the workflow they use and the software's capabilities.

I have reconformed pre build 30 material this way. Worked.

Shot @ 25fps

Edited @ 24

Retimed cam-proxies in Cinematools

Made offline proxies with CF
Re-conformed for online in CF

Cheers and good luck!
