  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Saw Canon's "Wonder Camera" demo on-line, and everything I read about it just made me laugh a little to myself.

I love how people that are commenting on this are acting like a stream of still images is an entirely new idea in motion photography, and how the form factor is supposed to be revolutionary.

Canon is apparently going to play 20 years worth of catch-up according to this.

LOL, ok kids lets play on future, it's like from 50's or 60's when they thought there will be nuclear cars and everybody will have a personal rocket... but displays were rounded CRT glass tubes and huge knobs all over :)

future is shine and bright

Let's see ... what's Canon guilty of?
Oh, I know.
Since February 1936 (some would say earlier) they have been advancing the art and science of photography.

As silly as the camera looks, certain features they are promising in it are pretty amazing. It's facial recognition algorithm looks promising. They are a photography company first and foremost and they have way different venues to appease. Sports photography with something with this advanced of auto focus would be ridiculous. I don't doubt it will have a lot of other tricks up its sleeve. I thought the hasselblad true focus feature was amazing, this would be mind blowing.

Interesting article... it was like déjà vu of things written on Reduser from a few years ago.

The camera of 2030? Two more decades of Canon dribbleware to get to this?
What will the shallow DOF fans think of everything in focus all of the time?

I hope that wasn't meant to be a serious goal. Everything allways in focus? Video only? Only happy faces?

Might be that the "infinite focus" mentioned stuff relates to it being a plenoptic camera, something the currently lined up Epics don't do.

Such camera with very high resolution and frame rate would be pretty kewl ;-)

Look how far & how fast camera technology has progressed in the last 20 years then extrapolate that out to the next 20. Does anyone here think the camera of 2030 can even be conceived today? Heck, 6 years ago if someone told us there would be a camera like Scarlet for under $20,000 (possibly well under $20,000) we all would have laughed them out of the room. 2030 is a long long way off, but some could argue so is Scarlet :)

That's exactly it. I just think it's funny that a Camera whose technology is arguably possible today (Canon could do this if they wanted to, it'll just cost you a LOT and I doubt they'd want to take the research away from their other divisions), is being promoted as a "camera of the future".

Just to remind you:

In_the_Year_2525_Single.jpg

"In the Year 2525 (Exordium and Terminus)" is a hit song from 1969 by the Lincoln, Nebraska duo Zager & Evans
which reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100 for the six weeks commencing July 12. The song was written
by Rick Evans in 1964 and originally released on a small regional record label (Truth Records) in 1968.
A year later, an Odessa, Texas radio station popularized the disc, which RCA Records quickly picked up for nationwide distribution."

"In the year 2525, If man is still alive, If woman can survive, They may find...".

The song has no chorus. Amid ominous-sounding orchestral music, the final dated chronological verse is,

In the year 9595, I'm kinda wonderin' if Man is gonna be alive.
He's taken everything this old Earth can give, and he ain't put back nothing, whoa-whoa...
,

The summary verse concludes:

Now it's been 10,000 years, Man has cried a billion tears,
For what, he never knew. Now man's reign is through.
But through eternal night, The twinkling of starlight.
So very far away, Maybe it's only yesterday.

In the year 2030 if you are still alive then you would not need any camera just because

it will be a sort of bio-electronic scanner directly connected with to brain or your day and night stream of consciousness.

That means you and your eye act as a camera and lens, then you just press record (in 5K, 8K or whatever you like even HD).

This can be wireless recorded to a small raid that's a part of your editing/post/VFX capable mobile or studio workstation and you are fine to make and edit finally your movie.

All those famous camera brands will be already dead at the year 2025...

THE FUTURE IS STUPID.

Easy. It'll capture a volume.

Cameras won't output images they'll output 3D Scenes. You can then render anything that the camera or set of cameras could see.

Wander around a room briefly and it'll capture the geometry and infer the texturing and shading as best it can.

The future of cameras is in photogrammetry.

Since it's capturing the scene in 3D you'll be able to of course do full relighting and re-framing. Frame rate will be largely irrelevant and effectively infinite. Render out your film in 24 or 200fps with adjustable focus, DOF and motion blur.

Stereo will be trivial since you are already capturing the 3D world.

In 20 years it's my prediction that every major studio film will be 'rendered'. What proportion of those are mostly fantastical and shot like Avatar and what percentage will be captured on real locations is a subject of debate but I bet that regardless of how the 3D scenes are generated (on location capture or 'performance capture') the final image will be out of a renderer not directly from an imaging sensor and lens.

Yes, after all - 2001 is the year we made contact so in 20 years we must have lunar bases, cameras that capture 'volume' and, oh, don't forget flying cars! :emote_22_yikes::lol:

Unlike moon bases and flying cars we just need sufficiently advanced software. Thankfully software has been moving at a breakneck pace. Even today often the greatest limiting factor in these technologies is precision. They're trying to build data from low resolution sources.

This isn't something that's 'going to be developed' over the next 20 years. It's already been developed it just has to be made usable and portable.

20 years ago motion capture was tempermental in a scientific lab. Now there's on set markerless motion capture. Some people are now demonstrating motion capture off of normally dressed individuals.
