I am on a PC, using Adobe CS5, and I am racking up tons of MX footage. Right now, I cannot seem to find any way to conveniently browse and delete useless clips directly. Am I missing something?

What about proxy quicktime codecs so I can view/delete R3D files directly from Windows File Explorer?

Thanks.

We have asking for this since 2007.

Presumably there is some secret agreement with Apple?

If not, surely at some point RED will figure out that the cost of employing a guy to port the Quicktime codec to PC is less than the return they'll get from selling extra cameras.

I can't imagine a Scarlet consumer cam review going down too well if the reviewer uses a PC and can't easily double click on a clip and play it.

Heck, just think how cool it would be to use one of those cheap Eee $500 netbooks with USB3 as a super fast transfer station... and ACTUALLY BE ABLE TO DOUBLE-CLICK ON CLIPS AND VIEW YOUR FOOTAGE!

Chalk up another (unnecessary) advantage to DSLRs. Hope they fix it. Even if it's just a stripped-down RedCine-X that is just a player module that is associated with .R3D files (and generates thumbnails).

This is a problem that needs a solution. Period.

Red team?

Does Adobe Bridge work for you? On a Mac, Bridge will read the QT ref files. It's part of CS5.

I browse with RCX or Clipfinder, but as Tom will note, you can't delete the garbage there. RCX is sorely lacking a a good rating and browsing system like LightRoom as well. With a client, we open up RCX and do selects, and we have to write our notes on (gasp) paper. You can take notes in Clipfinder, but its clumsy using it and then going to RCX and hunting the right file.

I think RCX can be the solution, with a stronger Browser (look at Lightroom for guidance) and the ability to kill files. But right now, it aint.

Tom with a large project like yours I'd recommend you look into something that will manage your media through the process like Final Cut Server. It will make life much easier.

Tom is on PC.

There are solutions for the Windows world such as Iridas Framecycler. But they can do much more than just browsing and hence are expensive (same realm as a new MacPro.).

Checking R3Ds in the finder like you can do that on OSX is very convenient. Should work on Windows as well, IMO.

Try REDcine-X Build 256 For Windows, its got a nice browser for your clips.
Good luck!

I second that. You don't have to put the clips in the timeline to playback on the preview window, you can double click to put them in the bin, double click one in the bin to playback in the preview window.

Then if you add a REDROCKET, the browser becomes a realtime 4K player, lol.

But you can right click the thumbnail to reveal it in the finder, then you can delete it in the finder.

I'm not sure I understand. All I want to do is preview R3D files and delete crummy ones directly. I will try to download new RCX when I have a better Internet connection. Right now I am using CS5 for Red, not RCX.

I always thought the inability to delete unwanted takes in camera and in RED software was a safety feature to avoid accidental deletion. It's a pain though, trying to sort through footage to delete. Redcine-X doesn't actually have any deletion abilities does it? I've just been searching manually through the HD or writing down filenames from Redcine-X and searching for them. Takes time, but it does make you think really hard before erasing footage.

Tom, you can drop all of the associated footage in the Bin, then double click to show each on the preview to play, if you see a clip that is rubbish, then right-click on the mouse will display a menu, then choose "show in folder" (sorry it wasn't FINDER as I previously noted). It will show the folder that the clip is at the file directory, so you can delete the whole RDC folder. At lease it will save you for searching the clip in the directory manually.

I am looking for a way to preview and directly delete R3D files.
