Help.We have gone round and round with this footage.
The last shoot had RSX looks applied which gave the footage a crazy orange tint.
This shoot all footage was run through Redcine with looks applyied within redcine. Exported out Prores 422 HQ 1920x1080.
Then Brought the edit into AE from FCP.
All of the footage was very overexposed and way to contrasty.
Replaced files with R3D and changed the color space within AE and POOF some of the clips look great others are questionable but ok.

Now on to my question. Is there a way to edit with the R3D files in
Final Cut Pro 7?(i do not want Pro res clips) and then send to AE

You could try Automatic Duck.

This is really the only way to get very accurate conforms from FCP to AE or FCP to AVID.

It costs actual money because it actually works.

56 views and zero responses.so..... noone has ideas

FYI. It took me three reads to figure out your question. I did not need the project history, just to know that you want to go from FCP to AE.

Yes. You can edit r3d in M proxy.

David

I thought the project history would help explain my problem but i guess not.sorry about that.

I have automatic duck thanks for that.

I have tried the proxies. Relinking to the R3D before i send to AE is what i need to do since the R3d's display the best possible color information for color grading.

Also why will FCP not allow me to import the R3d file. Am i missing a plugin

You cannot use R3D directly in FCP, only via the proxies. As far as AE, Autoduck your timeline to AE and then simply conform the proxies to the R3Ds there. Time consuming but fairly simple. I'm not sure if Clip Finder or another third party app could help speed that up.

Thanks that was what i was wondering.

Is there a explaination on the conforming process anywhere i could check out?

Do we know if final cut is giong to give us he option to use the R3d's directly anytime soon?

On FCP, no word that I know of from Apple and I doubt there will be until they either drop it on us out of no where or we all finally give up on it.

The conforming process, atleast as I do it on short projects, is to bring in the FCP time line via Autoduck, import the required R3Ds into the bin and then do the "Select/Option" replace method to switch out the proxies. Like I said, it's time consuming and not the most efficient way, but on short stuff it works well enough.

Other than that, I don't know of an easier way to prep a FCP timeline for AE, others here may have more current methods.

**Edit** You can conform the Autoduck XML using Clipfinder to replace the proxies with the R3Ds, although, obviously, the clip sizes may be off depending on your finished frame sizes.

Thank you very much Bruce. That was completely helpful. Now i don't feel so dumb

If you don't have a very complicated timeline with tons of effects already in it, and you're running cs5 suite, you could try a xml send to premiere pro, and than dynamic link to AE and than do the replace asset method like that. If you already have PP cs5, might help you save some money on the automatic duck.

Thanks tom. i already have automatic duck and we use Final cut pro.I tried premiere and was not a big fan of it (i am a final cut fanboy). But thanks for your input.

The newest version of Automatic Duck Pro Import AE 5.0 will let you automatically replace proxy media from FCP with R3D files when importing into AE CS5.

So, edit in FCP with proxies. Export XML. Import via Pro Import AE 5 into AE CS5. In the Pro Import options, check the preference to replace proxy media with R3D.

Change AE comp size and clip scale values as needed, since the R3D will be larger frame sizes than the proxy files.

Thanks Oliver.Unfortunately we do not have CS5. Looks like i have to go talk to the money people !!!! (the bosses)

Doesn't require CS5 for the replace to work, but it does require the AD update. It will install in CS3, CS4 or CS5. Just need whichever AE version will read native R3D files.

Try exporting XML from Final Cut, conform to R3Ds in Clipfinder, re-export XML and import it in AE using Boris XML transfer. Works pretty well.

I have upgreded to Automatic duck 5. But when selecting the proper options AE does not conform to the R3d files. It says i may have to use log and transfer to render out proxies. Why can't i just use the already created proxies?

UPDATE: unless you plan on using/or have used log and transfer to render out your proxies you cannot use the R3d features in automatic duck.

I hadn't thought about that but it makes total sense. In order for Duck to understand the path, it has to know the relationship between the proxy and the original. Since that's "dark" info contained within the L&T process, Duck taps into this in the XML. Same thing if you use FCP to batch capture again via L&T. When you convert externally and simply drag the clips into FCP, no such relationship exists. You can relink manually in AE, but that's one clip at a time, of course.

that is what the duck people told me.So if you are just using the camera created proxies no go !!!
