not trying to be a red fanboy..
but honestly..

what is the appeal to alexa vs the mx, besides name?

you got raw with MX..

someone please fill me in on why alexa is way more $$
for Less in my understanding.

i can only speak for germany.

what i know is:
arri will miss releasing dates (know 4 people who ordered an alexa)
it is intended for the TV Market.
few cinema productions are considering it (guess this whole codex thing sucks)
could change with the mini codex
the hardware doesnt need a gazillion gadgets to make it workable (...is the hope and what arri promises)
800 ASA will match 800 ASA on the lightmeter (they promise)

other thing, why do i hear with MX that it isnt really 800 ASA, instead its more like 400-500 ASA? (didnt shoot with it yet)

I just find it funny how alot of guys
are very much attached to the name arri..
they will rip on RED and digital cinema.. until ARRI comes out with their digital cinema camera with the same sensor as red mx, but not raw, and less rez..

More than just workflow perception. If they deliver on the DTE (prores) option, then every commercial client is going to want it because they care more about turnaround time than about grade flexibility (generally).

proxy module with dnxhd or prores should be the next step.

rocket transcodes in realtime, but transcoding realtime is not instant.
although avid supports r3d files now, it didnt really work for longform.
( i am getting low on memory messages), asfaik its not a 64 bit app.

proxy module, a cool proxy module is the way inmho.

SIM and BLING Digital in Toronto are having a big event this week to show off the ARRI ALEXA and show how they will work with the camera, etc. I've heard Michael Bravin will be attending.

It should be good to see how much more complicated ARRI RAW is to work with than REDCODE RAW.

I am guessing that at the onset the prores will be attractive in the begining beginning over R1 MX but the EPIC will be the tool that trumps them all.

Why?

-RED will not release an EPIC that is not a more bulletproof system.
-5K RAW
-SAME DR as ALEXA
-A bit more flexible for many applications.
-Photographers will by it.

Zac,
I don't understand why VER, Sim Video, and Otto Nemenz say they are buying 25-Arriflex Alexa cameras why not wait for EPIC?

i dont think its just name ...

alexa is a great camera .. with a lot of good features and it serves a certain market which i believe is mostly episodic tv shows

direct to edit , pro res, pristine 1080 p, and it comes ready to shoot with evf

put a lens on and go

As I said before, why does it have to be one v. the other? This is REDuser, so naturally those that read and post here are generally going to be those that are into this camera and likely the future offerings from RED. But that doesn't mean there's no place for the others in the market. Some people like to drive Mercedes; some like to drive BMW.

Yes, disclosure that we sell this camera, but we also sell Sony, Panasonic, Vision Research, Aaton, JVC, Canon and just about everything you might think of. And we happily rent the RED One and One MX. But we didn't dump the rest of our inventory the day RED came out.

Great camera. Happy to work with it. Not the only option.

true chris.. and while epic isnt out yet but will be shortly (hopefully)
my main question is.. why does alexa cost soooo much more?

when we can have an equal/greater epic-x with a prores module.. for way less...

my confusion really lays in the $$$ factor.. not the this vs that..
but why that cost so much more than this... as they seem to have similar qualities.

it does not cost that much more some but not to much 50,000 euros <$62000 usd>

i believe is what it will cost

the epic brain will be $28000 plus bomb evf and modules you could probably make it a $50,000 dollar camera really quick

dont the comparable film cameras cost over 100 k?
