  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Moving to larger PC.. Help and thoughts

Thanks Elsie,

I just ran my Config through their pricing.. over $7,000.00....

YEEE OUCH!
Yikes! That must have been with the Titanium case instead of the Aluminium one.

Looking at the case options to fit this board, I don't think I'm a fan of the PC-P80. That big protrusion on top and the top ports along with the front door you have to open up just to access any of the drives on the front... Sucks.

Cooler Master showed a prototype case for the SR-2, which looked really nice and elegant, but apparently it has been scrapped. I'm not exactly sure what the big deal is on the forums with people freaking out over finding cases to fit this board. It seems most any good E-ATX large server case will fit the bill. I guess people are looking for a case that isn't butt ugly and doesn't sound like a jet engine. Makes sense to me...

too expensive for me

too expensive for me

Hi, first of all, sorry for my english.

I don't understand so much your expectative from this sooo expensive system. But in the real world i think it can't be faster that other system a lot cheaper.

1. 12 Core isn't faster than 6 core in certain applications, maybe premiere can use 12 core, but i don't think that. I think more gpu is what you needs.
2. 48Gb of ram, for what?... for editing?, for 3d?... maybe with after effects, but i'm editor of final cut pro, and never go beyond 6GB.
3. I don't know what you do, but in my case, i prefer 2 computers with 1 processors, that 1 computer with 2 processors. I can use one computer for transcoding, or rendering, or caputure... and the other for editing.
4. Do you know that 2.66Ghz is too slow?. I'm working right now with a 4.2Ghz overclocked system. And the processor is i7 920 that cost to me 250€.
I recomend to you the processor i7 980x, that you can easily go at 4.5Ghz with 6 cores. (with overclock), and without overclock 3.33

I think 5Ghz in the real world is faster than 2 processor at 3Ghz.

This is your decision, but in my opinion big computer for a very big price, is the wrong way to go. Divide and win.

Saludos,

Jose.

of the record: i'm running original copy of osx in my 4core(8 Thread) 4.2GHz system(1500$) and without problem...

Both are ready for watercooling.
A watercooling system broke down the other night in the PC I built especially for video compression. Approx. $2000 worth of components totally fried and toxic coolant fluid everywhere. Yeah, I'm not a big fan of watercooling at the moment.

Also, Jay, I suggest you stay away from overclocking. I know there'll be lots of people claiming that oc'ing is a piece of cake and definitely worth the effort - but that applies only when you've already spent quite a bit of time (and $$$) learning all the tricks that go into building a stable oc'd rig. Trust me, you don't want an unstable PC for the purpose you're building the rig for.

I'l recomend sealed watercooling like corsair H50. It's cheap, and sealed. For me much better than the best air cooling. (I tested the 3 best air cooling). It so easy to install. I use it in 4 computers, no problem with it. All my computer are overclocked with it.

Respect the GPU, I prefer 2x nvidia 285 than 470. (This is my opinion) Four monitors better than 2. Or one monitor per GPU.

I think that if you spend 5000$ in a system, you can search someone that help you to make a stable overclock. A overclock of 25% is safe, and make your system 25% faster. If you want a system with more than 3.3Ghz the only way is overclock.
Some applications like final cut pro only use 4 core, at a max (normally for me 2 core). Redcine-X only use 4 cores. I think the only way to speed up is overclock.

This is only my opinion, you can do what you want with your money. I prefer to spend my money in extra hardware, like, control surfaces, graphic tablets, good monitors, a box for reduce noise of the computer, Rocket Raid card, and a good set of original applications and plugins with direct email support.

Jose.

Jose, personally I like your approach of two computers dedicated to different tasks like edit and render, but in respect to using 2 lesser GPU cards instead of one or more big ones, it's not really about the monitors . I think unlike with FCP and with Jay using Adobe CS5, it's more about the CUDA benefits for rendering and playback. From one of his earlier posts this is meant to be a render monster.

I agree, use the slower 2.66 cpu and clock to 4ghz, with the EVGA mobo and dual CPU's it should steam - remember, the cpu is seriously important for RED playback, the GPU does nothing. The GPU accelerates effects only - so you need the fastest and max cores possible to get multiple RED streams in real time. My system has 4ghz overclock from a 2.66 i7 - if I turn off the clock it barely plays quarter res RED4K, overclock on, plays half rez RED4K no problem. Buy a pre built mobo cpu ram cooler overclock package with guranteed performance, most decent companies will recomend psu's depending on graphics cards you want to use as well. Then stick it in a box and off you go - yeah the H50 water cooler is great too!

Also don't mess with anything less than 6GBs sata III SSD for system drive. believe me, with Windows 64 bit, the whole experience becomes rock solid, almost impossible to crash.

Forget the Supermicro mobo's as far as I know they never OC.

have fun

Paul

Petri, Some of the new motherboards and BIOS are making overclocking much easier as I'm sure you are aware of, and I personally will mildly overclock. But I agree. I don't think Jay will need to. His build will have so much horsepower and his workload sounds like it will be GPU heavy. Reliability will probably be of greatest concern. I like that he has chosen the Xeons over an i7. To me the Xeons are like Clydesdales while the i7s are like racehorses.

Elsie, i don't know if 470 is supported by adobe, and maybe like fcp, any of this application get all the power from the gpu. Sometimes you can get the same from 470 than 285, because the application are not design for that.
I get this from adobe website

Supported NVIDIA graphics cards for GPU acceleration
Quadro CX (Windows)
Quadro FX 3800 (Windows)
Quadro FX 4800 (Windows and Mac OS)
Quadro FX 5800 (Windows)
GeForce GTX 285 (Windows and Mac OS)

I think if you use one monitor per gpu you can have only one monitor in the first and more power for gpu effects.

Jose.

Nice options, I'm digging the CoolerMaster Haf X.

This is the one I have... could nor be happier. Completly toolless and love the hotswap bays.

As far as overclocking goes on the my motherboard there is an overclock button I simply pushed that and it wen from 3.3 to 4.1 on my 980x without doing anything at all. I did end up tweaking it a bit more to go to 4.3. With my new cooler I am well with in the limits of this chip for thermals....I have never had any problems with intel chips wwhen oc'd.

For watercooling there are easy solutions now that you just pop on...like coolmaster and corsair's which are sealed.

Jose, yeah the 470 will probably be supported soon and other posters on the board have pointed to a hack for using it now. But I see your point as well as your reasoning on the monitor distribution.

I can't tell you how helpful you all have been.. This overclocking thing seems like a pretty cool concept.. But I need to learn about it. For now, I'll just keep trucking along.

What about an SSD for your operating system?
If someone could weigh in on how an SSD could be beneficial to running an Application like CS5 PP, I would appreciate it. Does it only help in the startup of the app, or does it actually make PP run faster in some ways? I really need to know any bonafide benefit over a RAID 0 before 9:00 A.M - 12:59 PM Pacific Time, because Newegg has a Shell Shocker deal on aOCZ Vertex Seriesw OCZSSD2-1VTX120G 120GB 2.5" SATA II MLC Internal Solid State Drive (SSD)

edit
: the link probably won't work for the drive until 9:00 am
