I have some low-light footage I shot at ISO 1600.

1. In CS5, should I use ISO (1600) or FLUT to get the proper exposure?

2. What noise reduction can I use in Premiere Pro CS5? Is there any native NR in the demosaicing stage? I don't see noise reduction anywhere in the "Settings". What is currently the best option for noise reduction?

Thanks!

ISO or FLUT - your choice. Both achieve same result.

Precisely.

Then why have two separate settings?

Long story.....

Short version is that ISO is understood and is on light meters, and FLUT offers fully variable control and easy relative adjustments.

I was rereading all about FLUT today and that was what I was wondering!! Glad I wasn't going nuts.

BTW. You didn't answer Tom's question about Noise Reduction while demosaicing.

how good is CS5 with the Flut control! just love working with r3d's in cs5.

A good single malt scotch and total secrecy is needed for the long story... :-)

But I'm sure I did read that FLUT adjusts the exposure without ever clipping the Highligts. And I also read the Instruction to first adjust the desired ISO and than use FLUT to fine tune. Again confusing to me that it's exactly the same.
Wasn't exposure and Brightness in RED ALERT the same aswell. Why having more Controls than necesary, if they're simply the same... hmmm...

That is what I thought as well. And it even seemed to be the case in practice.

Tom, you should check out ABSofts's Neat Video noise-reduction plugin. I got the version for AE and it works great.

Hey Tom,

using the latest Red3Importer from Adobe Labs (which gives you build 30 colour science) there's a Chroma Denoise option in Source Settings in the Debayer box. That's what you're looking for I believe. It works just like the noise reduction function in RedCine-X.

But for difficult footage Neatvideo is far better – and with enough RAM it's very stable even in 4K in CS5.

Does it make a difference whether noise reduction is applied in the RAW/Demosaicing stage, or in the "RGB" timeline?
