Hello everyone
Teaser to a film I shot is up. We shot on three RED ONEs on location in Tijuana, B.C. Mexico and Los Angeles. The film stars Andy Garcia, Aidan Quinn, Gina Gershon, Luke Goss, Mario Van Peebles, Danny Pino, Gary Daniels, and more...

After driving the RED Ferrari through the woods, I have some things to say about it. I love the images it captures, but I hope they improve things when the Epic comes out such as the battery plate (which kept powering down the camera during shots with intense motion or loud gun noises - this applied to all three cameras) dropped frames due to loud gunfire, and audio fault errors when playing back from the 640gb HDs (again all three cameras) and some minor cabling problems with the EVF viewfinders and the monitors. Could have been that the rental bodies we had weren't taken care of but still...a few of the things I mentioned felt like they could be heavy-dutied up a bit. Overall it was a great experience and I'd shoot RED 1000 times over film. We recorded the equivalent of 185,000 feet of film in a 4 week schedule. Saved us probably $200k in stock, developing, dailies, and storage!

Well if you don't want to drop frames with gun fire you use the CF cards or the RED Ram. A spinning hard drive can only take so much shock. So this isn't the fault of the camera. I would say do some more tests next time. Also there are some cameras out there that are thrashed and have a problem staying on. I worked as a DIT on a show using two such cameras and they would power down for no reason. My RED MX doesn't do this but of course it isn't trashed. I guess this is just something you should be looking for next time if you decide to shoot on RED again.

As far as the trailer and the look I liked it for the most part. The thing that really gets me is that I can tell that you guys didn't have a technical advisor for the shots that involved weapons because if you had the actors would have looked like they knew what they were doing. One shot that stood out was where one guy is in the alley and is covering a doorway and the camera is in there. As the other members of his team go by and in he doesn't stop aiming his gun into the door way. So he is aiming right at the backs of his teammates. There's also a bunch of other little things that stood out to me. But again overall I liked the look for the most part.

Thanks for the comments guys. Yea, we put the cameras through the ringer. I suppose if we had the resources to get the REDRAM we would've. Dealt with the issues as they came but they never boned us in the long run so that's good. It was definitely the battery plates though. Our solution was to put a C47 on the side where the button/lever that releases the battery is. That stopped it from disengaging with a bump or a touch but for the really tough shots, solution number 2 for backup was to gaff tape the brick onto the plate as tight as we could. That sucked for speed of brick changes but really saved us time on the powerdown/powerup problems. Let's just say driving like 75-100mph over bumps with a handheld camera can cause some unusual changes in direction. So can gunfire at close range. Everything else was just a matter of normal wear and tear. Phenomenal camera though. On to the next one...

Thanks for sharing the post. Has principle photography wrapped? What stage is film at in post?

Hey everyone, thanks for posting here. I wanted to give this a bump since the film comes out on DVD and Blu Ray tomorrow (December 7th). Quickest turnaround I've ever seen on a film I've worked on. I'm very excited as it is the biggest and most widely released film I've lensed so far - as well as the only one I have shot on RED that has been completed and distributed so far (I did shoot two more features this year immediately following this one - both of the additional films were shot with MX bodies, and are due out 2011).

We shot on three RED ONE bodies before the MX upgrade was widespread. Good times, but I'm very glad the MX is around now. I used a really sexy Arri Ultra Prime set here mostly, with a Cooke 20-100mm on the pickup days. Anyway, here is the new trailer for this movie which is now called "Across The Line: The Exodus of Charlie Wright". The final color timing looks different than the trailer, but you get the idea:

Here is some Behind The Scenes material as well:

Thanks very much for watching. If you enjoy the trailer, drop it in your online queues or whatever :)
