  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Should I upgrade to M-X sensor?

I am still struggling about this. What is your advice?

Hi James, the Mysterium X is a vast improvement because:

-It effectively makes the R1 produce noise free, sharp images down to at least an ISO of 1280 (some say 2000). In a low light situation this often makes the difference between getting good images (MX), and not getting anything useful at all!
-MX has a notable improved dynamics range, approx 13 stops v/s 11 stops for M, this makes it a much better camera in hard contrast situations.
-Generally the shadow areas carry a LOT LESS noise, so if you need to dig in the deep shadows in post, you will still get a beautiful image with the Mysterium-X sensor, while the old Mysterium sensor will give you noise.

The Mysterium-X sensor makes your R1 a completely new camera, it´s something you will appreciate A LOT if you are shooting at night, or in dimly lit interiors, or when you have hard shadows and need that extra dynamic, and also for those times when grading in post requires that extra.

I am keeping my R1, and I will be using it for the next decade (along with Epic and whatever might show up) so for me the MX upgrade is a no-brainer.

Yo,

I hate typing but I'll second what eirik says above!!!!! I am a colorist and see what happens after you shoot not what the monitors on set show you. A world of diff! Noise you dont see on set will show up in post better in a proper viewing area. Now matter what your lighting situation a new sensor will show MUUUUUUUCHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH LESS TO NO NOISE!!! GET IT AND YOUR EDITOR AND COLORIST WILL THANK YOU FOR IT!!!!!!!

IT's a NO BRAINER at this point in the game!!!!!!! (epic....who knows when that will drop) Trust me. I have had to correct stuff from the old sensor where the DP has no idea what he is doing and has opted to turn the iso way to far up and it has made some footage almost unusable !!!

Heheh theres money well spent, you can easily save 5k in post if your colorist is faster and more able to work with the footage.

Absolutely.

The MX upgrade is worth every penny and it will double the life of your Red One as you will now have the same sensor as the newest Epic once it ships.

What kind of a question is this? Of course upgrade to MX if you've been called.

??????????????

Do it.

If you are keeping your R1 and are stage 2 then you need to do it to have an effective back up camera with the same "matched" sensor as EPIC.

If you are stage 3, use your R1 and sell it after you get your Epic.

This isn't possible as Stage 3 requires the return the R1.

Stage 3 people have a much harder decision to make with regards to the MX upgrade.

With the Epic bug delay, the timeline for Epic to ship has been a real wildcard for those trying to plan on cost/benefit of MX. Not everyone is going full speed ahead on rental income.

Maybe money is the issue, as it is with me right now, and therefore I'd like to come with a sobering note: however brilliant MX may be, it's not like you can't work with a Red M anymore; I just saw Life during Wartime, and it looked excellent. I'm sure if you have the money available it will be money well spent, if not, no worries; you have a wonderful camera

That's mostly true Hans, however with the MX I can now take my Red One MX on shoots in low light situation where the ordinary M R1 looses even to 18db gained HDV cameras.
So the MXsensor expands the capabilities of the Red One, you can of course still get beautiful images with the mysterium sensor.

My bad. I've forgotten everything after the stage 2.

To me it's simple. If you are not stage 2 then do not upgrade unless that job that is going to pay for the upgrade comes along.

WHy would you upgrade a camera that you are going to hand back. Sure you'll get back 1250 credit, but you'll spend that on accessories anyway.

If you are stage 3 then upgrade is a vanity purchase unless the work is paying for it.

If you need to ask the question, you do not deserve the upgrade...come on guy's use your brain's.

Well, dual mis-use of possessive grammar aside (your brain's what exactly?) - your condescending response is not a constructive argument.

I have seen (and heard) many things about the MX sensor (some public, some very private) - I have heard many arguments from many top end professionals working with the footage who tell me there is no difference in the sensors in well-lit properly exposed footage. Further, that there are contrast streaking issues with the sensor, that the footage seems more videolike in its motion and so on.

I have also heard it's faster (in ISO terms) but this is not in itself a benefit if the contrast builds up too, nor the video-like motion rendering.

Further I have plunked down a chunk of change to purchase an Epic only to be told shortly afterwards that there is now a bug in the system (From what I have heard I suspect I know what this is) that has been plaguing Red for two months (that means they took my Epic down-payment knowing about the bug).

We are using our brains. You?

To everyone who took the time to post a useful response. Many thanks. Appreciated.

I call FUD on that. Noone who has shot with MX has commented on it being equal to M footage, from students to ASC/BSC members.
