  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

R1-MX vs Canon 7D @ 1000 ISO Quick & Dirty Side by Side Test

The 7D will out shoot the Mysterium X ONE in still mode any day of the week... ill put my money where my mouth is on that one...

Like Sanjin said, not at all. You do realize these tests are versus 7D stills (though in video mode), right? M-X vs. 7D video would be a no competition, obviously.

I think we forget how incredibly the M-X sensor really is.

No these are still taken FROM video... Much lower quality than what the RAW stills are capable of.

No, they aren't. They aren't screengrabs from 1080p H.264 video, this is something Sanjin has clarified before. They are stills taken in video. Perhaps stills in stills mode would be far superior, but I would still put my money on M-X.

^^^ your obviously not understanding something... Clicking down the image button while in video mode is not a representation of the 7D's still mode by any means... in fact they look like shit... I would never even consider taking stills in "video" mode... and I would not ever put my money on the MX over the Canon .RAW files that I get in "picture" mode... this test is only relevant in the comparison of red .Raw files compared to 7D .H264 files in the standard picture mode... that is all... send me a RED and I'll show you how close I can get it to the RED MX... im not saying it will be better(in video)... but a Hell of a lot closer than this...

I said quite clearly, stills in stills mode would be superior. In fact, I said far superior. Do read my post carefully. Not sure what you are accusing me of. I hope you realize too that stills in video mode are superior than the H.264 1080p video. 7D video vs. M-X video will be an absolute no-contest, and expectedly so. Anyway, there are still comparisons with Canon DSLRs around the forum already. I remember seeing a M-X vs. 1D test from Graeme recently. M-X was clearly superior.

Are we learning something new here? We all know if you take a still image of the video from the Canons, you can pick it apart. The only problem is consumers do not view still images (video*) or charts.

Anyway, I thought DSLR talk was banned on reduser or is it only allowed when its to bash the new breed of HDSLR's. I'm confused :confused5:

Pardon me, but how closely have you worked with the 7D, 5DII, Red One, and Red MX? Don't be offended-

But, allow me to set a few things straight for you:

1. When you click the Photo Shutter on a 7D in live view mode (or while rolling video) it does indeed take a full 18megapixel (raw or jpeg depending on your settings) still. it actually closes the shutter and reopens to continue rolling video.

2. I think what some of these gentlemen here are talking about is pulling a still from the h.264 stream, and some are talking about taking a canon .cr2 file.

3. When you say the image from a 7D in stills mode will beat an MX still - please clarify. Do you mean in Resolution? Or overall look? Obviously 18 megapixels is "more Megapixels" than 12.1 (or whatever it calculates out to be) however the MX pixels seem to be better Pixels to me...

Personally I ~prefer~ the look of a tiff pulled from the MX than the 7D sensor (.cr2), and probably from the 5DII sensor too. This is strictly based on observation working closely with both cameras and sensors. Yes you can probably get a "Cleaner" look from the 7D sensor, however there is something VERY natural and attractive - dare I say FILMLIKE coming from the MX sensor. It's a sexy mojo and I can't explain it in technical terms but you can get very rich, attractive stills from the MX sensor, and RedCine-X makes it easy to grade.

I think Red know that Banning discussion is the biggest admission of weakness - we're the ones who look like idiots going on and on about how much better this is or that is, or whatever. This is free research for any company - we do tests, and duke it out about specs all day long and its a perfect case study.

In the end it comes down to this: Use the best tool you can afford to get your hands on, and shoot great stuff. No matter how you break it down, the future holds a lot of exciting new tools and toys for us to play with, and there is a lot of neat stuff that is affordable now if you work your ass off.
:cheers2:
