So, based on my budget (under $2k), I'm unsure which 17" Macbook Pro to get which would be most beneficial to my use. It will be used for DIT usage, such as transcoding, but also I love to do post work within After Effects & Final Cut. I'm sure both choices are very powerful, but is there any substantial difference between the two?

I just bought a 17" 2.53 i5 it's great! My last laptop was the 2.93 17" and I can say that the i5 is much faster and runs a bit smoother. Make sure to upgrade the RAM. The video card is significantly better on the i5 model as well.. The 2.93 will work totally fine for you, but the i5 is the better machine. If budget is an issue, go for the 2.93.. If you're planning on keeping this computer for 2+ years, spend the extra money on the i5.

I have a 3.06GHz I bought late last year as my personal machine and I have a new 2.66GHz i7 model for the rental kit and mobile DIT system. I know that you're asking about the i5, and I can tell you the i5 is noticeably faster than the Core 2 Duo (2.93 etc..). The i7 is another jump up.

Under $2K for a 17" is a tight budget. If you can get the i5 and 8GB RAM within your budget, then GO FOR IT! I would sacrifice and go with 4GB RAM temporarily before I downgrade the CPU in this case. But 4GB is the bare minimum if you're trying to run Adobe CS5...

ram and hard drive you can always upgrade later as you funds grow, as Jeff has mentioned you are probably better off going for max processor if at all within your range now, and upgrade other things later on. You won't have a chance to swap out the processor, and the stuff you want to do will use a lot of everything. But at least you can gauge how much more of what you need from situation to situation. Once more 64 bit solutions come through, every bit of juice the computer can put out is that much more time you save in the transcode/post software process. (ram is dirt cheap too lots of third party solutions other than apple that give great performance for a better price)

ok great, thanks so much guys! I think i5 it is

decided to buy the i7 haha, will put her through the ropes today.
